Irish Champions League TV Rights 2012-15

In their sign off tonight on TV3, it sounded very much like they weren't going to have the rights for the next period of CL games with the presenter thanking the pundits for their company over the last 3 years... Anyone know what the rights arrangement for Ireland will be for the next contract period?

In the UK, ITV and Sky will continue to share the rights. However, ITV's game will move from Wednesday to Tuesday. Hopefully RTÉ still have the Wednesday game. This would be great for Free-to-air viewers to have Tuesday's game on ITV1 HD and Wednesday on RTÉ2 HD.

God I hope that's true TV3 (and 3e) are a blight on football.

It wouldn't be the worst thing to happen. The RTE format has gotten shocking tiring.

After the 'ironical' 'world class tattoos' we've witnessed tonight, I hope that TV3 aren't let near the Champions League ever again.

Big hole in FTA football so, playing right into Murdoch's hands as usual.

I've had to watch some games on streams rather than put up with TV3/3e this year, so anyone other than them is good news. LOF's HD streams are far better quality than TV3 also.

The list of problems is endless, and they've had years to solve them, yet they consistently get worse every year.
    • Starting the program 20 minutes before the game, and ending 20 minutes after.
    • 10 minutes of ads, and 5 minutes of 'analysis' at half time.
    • Commentators not knowing what to say during the game, so just saying whatever comes into their heads.
    • Commentators not knowing which player is which.
    • Commentators not being able to pronounce any names correctly (Tell-you/Tay-you tonight)
    • Picture is always too dark, compared to RTE/Sky.

It's the price the punter pays. State run TV and the smaller independents will not be able to afford to pay the prices. The clubs are demanding top dollar and subscription TV provides it.

Football will surely envelope in on itself. Completely unsustainable. The group and first knockout rounds are sleep inducing. Never watch them anymore.

Iirc itv moved coronation st from Wednesday only a couple years ago to facilitate the footie. Doubt theyll upset all the ould wans by moving it again. I also think uefa has champ league available fta in every country hence id imagine it will have some fta presence in Ireland. Tv3 is v annoying but its better than nothing

Was watching the match tonight on TV3 until the start of the secong half but had to switch to the sky sports stream on the leptop. Just could'nt listen to them anymore.

    Rules havent changed.

Wonder if not being FTA helped RTE get its arse in gear regards saorview.

Optioned, presumably. They'll not give it for free.

Complaining about TV3 is well and good but at least they carry the matches at little cost to the viewer - if you dont like the analysis you dont have to watch it.
If the PPV stations manage to monopolise these matches (I am not sure, if under legislation, whether they can tbh) it will cost the standard punter a hell of a lot more money to watch them.
I have to be honest, I haven't watched a full soccer match in ages, way too much on TV and watching to many dull games has me tired of it tbh,

It'd be great if TV3 weren't showing anymore Champions league games. They go on like they're doing us a favour when in reality, i wish they'd leave football to ones more competent!!

Honestly, I'd rather have to make the effort to go to the pub for the games of consequence rather than TV3 debase football with their inanities for free. The tabloid lowest common denominator analysis and the incessant smugness of all involved is bile inducing. I'd rather watch a chimp drink its own piss than watch TV3's 'analysis'. TV3 do a good line in showing chimps drink their piss, it's what their good at.

The rules specify that every market must split games between FTA and subscription tv and/or that no one company can have both nights so here it was RTE/TV3. Presumably it'll be RTE and Setanta, SKY or ESPN next time.

If RTE should pull the plug due to their inability to fund themselves that'll be a poser for the powers that be as the whole lot could go to pay tv by default.

The wiki list for the next deal period omits Ireland.

Do you not find "analysis" to be in general, rehashed, trash talk the majority of the time anyway, by 90 percent of analysts? (I know TV3 are perceived to be bottom of the barrel either way)
It's almost a total fictional account of a sporting event with guys who are trying to hang onto a few shillings.

Id rather watch the matches on fta than pay Sky or the likes for the "privilage" tbh.

Just announced that RTE have rights to show CL for 2012-15, that means we will almost certainly end up seeing the same game as ITV1 chooses again.

Ah Its on Wednesday so jubbly!

ITV are showing Tuesday night games from next season on while RTE will be showing on Wednesday nights!

TV3 continue with their Tuesday coverage for another 3 seasons, oh glory.

Whilst I don't like their coverage, it's great to have football on the Irish channels for those that can't afford Sky or don't want to use internet streams etc.

If it ends up on a subscription channel it's yet another example of football being taken away from the average Joe Soap.

But ITV move to Tuesdays, so as bad as the "ROOOOOOOOOOOOOONEYYYY" obsessed commentators are they sure beat dopey Trevor and Mark (bearing in mind they will almost certainly be showing the same games).

Thats true, it does cushion the blow a lot.

I see someone referred to TV3 as 5 minutes analysis and 10 minute adds at half time.
I actually timed a halftime interval this year and it was far worse than that.
2 mins 30 seconds of analysis, 1 min 20 of internal ads (phone in competiton, reminder of EL game on Thursday), 40 seconds of UEFA idents, and 10 min 30 secs of paid ads.

However boring tv3 is I cannot bear to listen to Gary Neville on sky sports, he is terrible. Can you imagine what it would be like when stevie g retires and he takes up commentary with Neville, that would be one snooze fest.
