Currently have an 06 VW Passat 2ltr Turbo Diesel. I do a lot of driving aprox 600km per week. Road tax on the Passat is very high and its costing me a fortune to run. I'm totally clueless about cars so am wondering is it worth my while changing to a smaller diesel car eg. 1.4 Astra?

You would be insane op. The difference in fuel prices would pay the extra tax over several times. Also a 1.4 Astra is gutless compared to what your driving and like a rock to drive..

Might as well do 30k km a year in comfort. Also doing that mileage is gonna cost money, might as wel do it in the comfort of the Passat. Apart from the road tax you should see 45-50mpg anyway.

You're talking about spending thousands to save a few hundred and a couple MPG, and lose out big time on comfort.

How many miles have you on the Passat and what would you expect to get ? 10k max ?

The Passat is a grand car but unfortunately we are going to be driving smaller and older cars as fuel tax keeps rising!

    Check out this corsa

Sure it isn't a passat, but the 1.3 is not bad even in 75 ps, the 90 hp is better of course but for the size of the car the 75ps is not bad.

You might be able to sell the passat and have enough money left to buy the corsa AND have enough for a year or 2's worth of diesel, that is of course you are serious about downsizing, forget about all the "you'd be mad" posts, if the objective is to save money then go for it.

You will find that engine in the Grande Punto, Corsa and Astra and it's chain cam too which is usually better if the correct oil was used and changed on time they last a long time!

    Check this out

Or this an 08 and cheap tax (for now anyway)

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Peugeot/308/ST-1.6HD/201205206855062/advert?channel=CARS

    Loads of examples out there.

The Hyundai I30 has a good 1.6 Diesel too and is chain cam, good if you are raking up the miles!

My sister has the 90 hp 5speed manual 308 and it's a good car, only lack of 6 speed reduces economy a bit, best I can get as a hyper miler is 55 mpg, not bad but could do better. Look out for a 6 speed but for the price you can't go far wrong.

I would not wish driving 600km a week in a Corsa on anyone, irrespective of what type of fuel they use. Doing 600km in a supermini is madness.

Beats walking if money is tight!

No offence, but if someone is noticing how much it's costing to fuel their car then they need to look at getting rid of it.
