I've always wondered exactly how many people on this forum are in any manner professionally involved with the legal system.

So, I've decided to put up a poll. Please note it is anonymous so don't fear you will be harassed by people looking for advice if you say you are a solicitor!

What do you work as? 64 votes

    Barrister
    0% 0 votes
    Solicitor
    9% 6 votes
    In house counsel / Paralegal
    17% 11 votes
    Judge
    4% 3 votes
Officer of the Court (Registrar etc.)
    4% 3 votes
    Garda
    0% 0 votes
    Law student
    9% 6 votes
Law related education - lecturers etc.
    34% 22 votes
    Other (law related)
    3% 2 votes
    Other (not law related)
    17% 11 votes

    Jesus a Judge!

Actually, I don't believe that for a second.

I note in the Engineering Forum posters submit their quals and experience; obviously a very bad idea here unfortunately.

You need to add 2 more options to the poll. 'Freeman' and 'criminal looking to get off'.

Also, in-house counsel and paralegal should probably be just "paralegal", as in-house solicitors and barristers will be able to choose those options.

Maybe also "academic (other)" to cover criminologists, political scientists, sociologists etc, if there are any.

    Also "journalists" and "civil servants"?

    [EDIT:]
Nuts! Only just noticed that it's multiple choice. In this context, does that mean I could have ticked more than one box, rather than just the one that pays me the most?:)

And they say you can't be a Judge AND a Garda.

It's just that I have this whole "private foreign jurisdiction court" going on. It's a nightmare, I tells ya!

The mods got a bit self-important when answering the poll :D

My background is in quantity surveying, so I've done law as a subject, not as a course. I've done some contract, tort and land law.

In my spare time I edit / write council bye-laws.

You would need to enable multiple choice. :)

Aren't there special rules about judges commenting publically? As in they shouldn't do it?

Also, I thought there was something about barristers not supposed to identify themselves as barristers when commenting on law or some such.

I think once they don't mention anything similar or relevant to any ongoing case, and don't breathe a word of public policy, they're in the clear.
Nevertheless, I'd be surprised if there's really a single judge on here, never mind 3.

Perhaps the judges post thru their tipstaffs

Speaking of which, shouldn't tipstaff be an option in the poll?

    Interesting results.

Should multi-disciplinary partnerships ever make it into the Irish legal market, then I think we have the makings of one... now to come up with a humorous name!

I'd be very interested in hearing what the people who voted other - law related do.
Perhaps we have some people from the Dept. of Justice & Equality among us!

I voted other as none of those really apply to me.
I'm a bartender/law graduate (not a student, academic, barrister etc) so nothing really applies to me.

    Lockstep

You may describe yourself as a law student. Once you start studying law, you never stop as it evolves by the day. I am 70+ and am still learning.

Best of luck in your career however it developes. I recall some of your posts which were very practical

No problem with Barristers saying they are a Barrister if taking about legal issues, as long as they do not speak about any case in which they have or are briefed.

Not sure which category I fit into, I'm a pre-PPC I trainee, so not really a law student and not really a solicitor ...
