I'm a Leaving Cert Student and I currently have Science in Galway down first on my CAO, to be honest i couldn't imagine myself going anywhere else!
I was just wondering in relation to Undemoninated Science, is it possible to take a year of that and then branch off into a more specific course such in Marine Science for the rest of the degree? I feel out of all the science courses that are offered I would most enjoy Marine Science but I would at least like to do a year of Undenominated Science just to gain a broader spectrum of the subject?

Many thanks for your help! cleardot.gif

If you do Marine Science your first year is undenominated science basically.

If you do Marine Science your first year is undenominated science basically.

I'm afraid Marine Science isn't at all like Undenominated Science in first year, or indeed any year.

As it currently stands, Marine Science is obviously a denominated course with essentially five compulsory course that you must take; the only elective course of sorts is whether you take applied, pass or honors maths.

However the Marine Science undergraduate programme is undergoing a major change over the next year or two; I'm unsure if these changes will take effect in the upcoming academic 2112 or the year after 2113.

Basically the current programme is fractured, particularly for students whose interest in Marine Science is in the related physical processes therein.

What aspects of Marine Science are you interested in?

I'm currently in final year Undenominated Science. In 2nd year you pick 3 subjects, then 2 in 3rd year and then specialise in one subject for final year. You will still graduate with a degree in Undenominated Science.
As far as I know, Earth and Ocean science is a half subject in 2nd year, so you wouldn't be able to specialise in it in final year.

To be honest it would probably be a lot of hassle to do one year undenominated and then try to transfer your course to a denominated degree. I personally haven't heard of anyone doing it, but that's not to say it isn't possible.

If Marine Science is the course you think is most suited to you, then I would say to put it as your first choice in the CAO, and undeneominated second. It doesn't really make sense to switch courses after a year!!

I couldn't say exactly what aspects of it I would be interested in, from what info I have gathered in the prospectus however I think that I would find it pretty interesting! I'm doing Honours Maths, Applied Maths, Physics Biology for the leaving and they are by far my most favoured subjects. I also do Geography and living beside and sometimes on the sea has kind of makes me feel like Marine Science would be for me!

Would anyone recommend the course or have any wise words to contribute?!
Earth and Ocean Science would also be a consideration of mine.

The first year of Marine Science is the same as Undenominated to an extent: You get Biology, Maths, Earth & Ocean and a semester each of Physics/Chemistry. If those are the sort of subjects you want to do, then you should have no problem transferring into Marine Science in a later year if you wanted.
All completely broad and not specifically marine. You actually won't do much especially 'marine' themed stuff until 3rd year.
I'm just finishing 3rd year, and would honestly hold off picking Marine Science for now as I know a lot of people who aren't too happy with the current disorganised feel of the degree. You can be in undenominated and still pick 3rd year subjects like Marine Ecology and Marine Geoscience anyway, so you could do an Undenominated degree with a bit of a marine theme to it.
It's interesting what The Keen Edge said about the undergraduate programme undergoing major changes, I spoke to the Dean recently about my concerns and it wasn't mentioned: I'll be intrigued to see if it changes for the better.

I'm in third year undenominated, do you not graduate with a degree of the final year subject?
