Mother in law has given up driving so we are buying her car (2004 with only 14k on it). But what's the best thing to do with our old Avensis? Will anyone want to buy a 14 year old well used family car?

    Yes they will.

New NCT and the right price and it will be gone in a day.

14 is not old. I'm driving a 17 year old car at the minute and there is plenty driving older.

draiochtanois what has this got to do with the query I posted?

If you read it correctly you will see we have bought the 2004 car that has only 14k on it and are looking to shift our older 1998 car

put it up on donedeal for a couple of hundred quid. someone will buy it. if it has tax or test left on it even better!! there is always someone looking for a cheap run around..

now a 2004 car with 14k on it should be like new but it should have been serviced at least 7 times, timing belt replaced (if it has one) maybe a new set of tyres etc

    some on donedeal

Im in the same boat, 14yr old Petrol 2.0l jeep! not sure if thats going to be easy to shift at all:(

It's a 1.6 petrol and NCT's till the end of the year. I just serviced it and change the sparks (lean burn engine so they'll last for another 50k) and got new front shocks. If I known 2 months ago we'd be changing vehicles I wouldn't have bothered doing all that but a perfect 04 car with 14k, serviced every year and just NCT'd was too good a deal to turn down. I've advertised her on adverts.ie and a couple of other websites so heres hoping

Whatever you do OP make sure to give the new car a good service. Don't assume that because it only has 14k miles on it, it'll be all good. A lot of the wear n tear items will be in great nick but I would fear the mother in law might be the average driver who hasn't a clue about the importance of oil changes.

If she hasn't driven it much I doubt it's been serviced much. Even with low mileage it should be changed at least once a year.

EDIT* I see you said she had it serviced every year. Fair play.

My partners mother bought a new car, has done 57k kilometers and looks surprised when I asked if she was going to get it serviced.

Her answer was "Sure it's new, it won't need a servicing for a few years."

    :O

Yes she also insisted that the oils will be fine for a few years too. :/

That Avensis will be snapped up easily enough. In these tough times, cheap, reliable cars with some NCT left on them that don't require borrowing for are what are selling.

I'd be expecting more than that unless there's loads of miles on it :)

Not a whole lot more in fairness.

Indeed, but the guts of €200/€300 is decent enough sum in these recessionary times :)

It has 94k on her and I've advertised at €999 but open to offers
