NCT - brakes

Failed the nct a million times now and only the last time did one of the guys tell me what's wrong, the brake drums.

When the car brakes it kinda jitters instead of a smooth brake, when it was on the rolling road we could see it bouncing up and down, the guy said it's because the brakes are hitting in some spots and not in others and its definitely the drums that need replacing.

I've sent it back to the garage telling them it's the drums. So can anyone tell me if the nct fella is correct or am I just getting another wrong thing fixed? The garage replaced the brake cylinders last time. It has new brake shoes and brake pipes, they needed replacing as they were rotten.

I haven't a clue about cars, i only bought it to learn to drive in and so far haven't driven it at all.

Thanks in advance for any information anyone can offer, it's a fiat seicento 00 in case anyone is wondering

Sounds like you need to get it checked by a competant garage TBH.

Should have said the brake pipes had to be replaced because it failed the first nct on that and the brake shoes were replaced during a service by a different mechanic to the one that changed the brake cylinders.

It seems to be a guessing game when it comes to failing the NCT because the guy that failed it before the last time didn't have a clue what the problem was, he just said "there's definitly something wrong with the back brakes"

When it was bought, did you notice any problems with braking?
I assume not as you still bought it.

When the mech takes the drums out they should be able to see what's wrong.

The guy in th eNCT puts it on the machine and gets the results. He doesnt go taking your car apart to diagnose problems. He can offer an educated guess or may know from the symptoms what the issue likely is, but it's still not his job. At the end of the day , for the reasons of getting blamed on things like you going off and getting unecessary work done, I think they are best off just giving the fail cert and not offering their own opinion. Especiallly when dealing with people who dotn know anythign about cars, by the time they get to a mechanic it could be like chinese whispers and the person hasnt a cluse what they were told.
