Folks, my wife's car has a leak in the rad, and also the coolant needs topping up at least once a week..

I'm hoping rad weld will sort the rad, is there a similar product for the coolant system?

    Cheers,

    S

What car is. I hope it's not a new car, rad weld isn't the answer il give your a example.i had a car in the other day kept building pressure in the head and bursting pipes in the coolent system as it turned out the head gasket had gone in the car, it wasn't until I removed the head that I seen the damage the owner done by putting rad weld into his coolent system.

When I removed the head of the engine(BMW e46) all the water jackets were completely blocked by who ever put rad weld into the engine it stuck to every thing. The car needed a lot of coolent pipes a new thermostat a new water pump and last but not least a new head gasket. Now personally I reckon that the rad weld was part of the problem as it had blocked the water from moving around the engine.

My advice get a second hand rad souls only cost u no more the 50e other wise it will get very expensive , new cars don't like rad weld but that's just speaking from past experience

You could try it.but a beter solution to rad weld is a bottle of nova stop it's a lot beter then rad weld honestly so go to the motor factors get a bottle of nova stop for leaking rad add to the expansion bottle of if the radiator has a cop on it put it in there make sure there's enough water gone outa the rad to be able to get the whole bottle of nova stop in and fill the rest up with water refit the cap to the rad and run the car for about 15 to 20 mins and that will seal your rad.

The radiator is part of the cooling system. Rad weld/nova stop etc is a very short term solution generally.

A second hand rad would be better if your on a budget, but if you have been driving with a leak that bad for any period of time there could well be other issues on the way.

I have advised the op that these products are not the solution.im sure he is well aware that the rad is part of the cooling system he said he didn't want to spend money on it the op was also told that a second hand rad would be got for about 50e I've also advised of the possible affects from my previous experience what it will do to the car.but anyways let us no which route you choose

im sure he is well aware that the rad is part of the cooling system
due to their being a cap on the rad, and a cap for the coolant, i thought they were two independant systems.

Advising the OP to add a full bottle of Novastop is wrong imo.

From what I remember, you should only use about a quarter of a bottle of Novastop for the average cooling system capacity.

I think the point that was being got at is although your leak may now be stopped, don't be under the impression that your problem is permanently fixed.

On another note....you say the one 400ml bottle is enough for 25L of coolant..and the guy said that was right for your engine. Your engine cooling system is only just over 4L total capacity:eek:
