Was told by sky cutomer service rep last week that i couldnt get sky multi room in cork if i had UPC phone. So i ran a ohone line from telephone prot 1 on my thompson wireless router to by current sky box. Went to the installation menu. No telephone prefix number. New installation callback and success. Rang sky 5 mins later and said that i have demonstrated that i could perfom a callback and it was logged on their system so they said ok..... RESULT!!:D

    Hi Guys,

Just reading the thread and trying to figure out how to have everything ready for whenthe SKY installers come.!

I have recently bought a new house and am moving in shortly. There was an Eircom line which has been disconnected and just has a standard Eircom message re reconnection if you try and make a call from it. i.e the account of the last home owner has been closed. I got the UPC broadband and phone installed yesterday and all is working that end. I got my electrician to run two TV cables to each of the places i intend having the SKY boxes so that it is nice and neat. I was doing some renovation works so it was easy to run the cables from the attic without any mess and they are all hidden behind stud walls etc. I also got him to put phone sockets at each TV point.

How will it work when trying to hook up the SKY boxes to the phone line to get a call back? The UPC modem will be beside one of the SKY boxes so this can prob connect directly? If i get a phone line splitter and plug a phone line from the UPC modem to the phone socket in the wall will it activate the phone points throughout the house and allow the other SKY box to call back?

I did an expirement last night where i plugged a phone line from the modem into the phone wall socket and then plugged the UPC phone into another phone socket in the other room. I could get a dial tone and call out on the UPC service but i could still hear the Eircom message being played in the background. Will this have any affect?

I am a slight technophobe so would appreciate a steer in the right direction..!

    Many thanks

    FP

Yes this would have an effect. It could blow the UPC line or the Eircom line.

What needs to be done is to disconnect the Eircom line properly. At some point in the house, normally at the main phone socket at the front door, all the other phone sockets are joined to the Eircom line. You need to disconnect the wires coming from the street so you can no longer hear the reconnect message at each phone outlet.

When this is done you can connect the UPC line to the internal wiring. If unsure ask the electrician where the phone wires join to the line from the street. Some houses have a small box built into the wall outside where the phone line arrives.

Cheers zg3409. I will get the electrician to do this. Once this is done will plugging a cable from the modem to the phone socket beside it activate the other phone lines and allow the sky call backs?

    Cheers

Yes it should. As you have two boxes you would need a splitter on the UPC box to allow two phone lines to be connected to it. (line 2 on the box is different to line 1)

Great hope that works. So just to be clear. All the output has to come through Line 1 on the modem? I will need two splitters so will I?

Room 1 - Splitter in Line 1 of modem with 1 line going to SKY box 1 in that room and the other line going to phone socket in the wall to activate the other phone sockets in the house incl Room 2 where the second SKY box is located.

Room 2 - Splitter at the phone point which should now be active from the line coming from UPC modewm in Room 1. From this splitter 1 line going to SKY box 2 with the second line being connected to the UPC phone.

    Does this sound correct?

Is there some adjustments to be done with prefixes when setting up the SKY boxes? The SKY guy told me they can connect via UPC VOIP lines so hopefully the technicians know what to do..!

Yes, that setup is correct. Sometimes there needs to be a slight change in the prefix. Basically this adds a delay. This allows to the Sky box to "pick up the phone", then wait for a few seconds, before dialling. This can be helpfull as sometimes if the Sky box takes the line and dials very quickly the UPC line can miss the first couple of numbers.

However the Sky installer might know this, but if the box is working then I would not worry about it.

    Cheers. Thanks for your help.
My installation went perfect. No prefix needed at all. Call back on first attempt.
