Interview with no position available

Hi, just looking if anyone has had any experience of this.

I'm in Australia but its a universal enquiry :)

I've been emailing companies my CV even if they aren't hiring/advertising jobs. I got a very casual reply from the Managing Director of one of the companies saying that they have no vacancies in the area i'm looking for but that vacancies can come up during the year and its doesnt hurt to meet and say hello and we should organise a meeting.

Obviously I'll meet them as it definitely wont do any harm, but has anyone ever had a meeting like this with no positions available? Has anyone been the "interviewer"? I assume it'll be less formal than a proper interview but I still dont know what to expect, I obviously want to make a good impression even if theres no jobs going.

    Cheers!

to be fair some companies like to meet people and see what prospective employees are like. you would never know, some like employees to show the initiative, a guy in my office was recruited that way.

what is the worst that can happen.

well just treat it like a proper interview with a job at the end of it. it is a good thing that they want to meet you.

    best of luck.

You really have to put your best foot forward, meet and greet and think of it like a sales meeting, the product on offer being you!

Over the last few years I've done a few of these (although the companies contacted me as opposed to me applying to them), but what happens is that with the best intentions things change, contracts are lost or scaled back etc., and the role just doesn't happen.

Of course when you're job hunting and looking for something concrete now, it can seem like a waste of time and a bit frustrating. Many years ago I applied on spec to a company (including demo code and programs) and was called to interview to find out there was no job but they just wanted to know how the demo worked - that was frustrating...

Agency meet and greets - when no role exists - that's a different kettle of fish altogether...

    D.
