Im driving a 98 almera and noticed the gear change getting a bit rough,
fair enough the car is 14 years old so no wonder.I decided to change the
gear linkage bushes Im told one of the bushes can not be bought without
buying the entire gear lever assembly at a cost of 90 euro plus vat. Can
anyone tell me is this a joke or what.

Just buy the entire gear lever assembly. Think of the creamy smooth gear changes and forget the huge cost. Well, it's not really huge, is it? In the grand scheme of things. You are quite tight, aint ya!:)

Surely there's a spurious part for this? eBay, micksgarage, online automotive

Happens in all walks remember a small part (cog) losing teeth in hp printer. For a while we could get the part then they took the piss and there was half the printer attached..

    ..rant over :)

Hardly tight if all he needs is a piece of rubber .. Would you pay 90 for a piece of rubber? ....not to forget the added costs/time to fit the new lever

But think of the creamy gearchanges etc. Anyway, Nissan are notorious for this, try getting parts for Primastars etc, and really, if €90 is the cost of repairing the car, well, you pays your money etc etc. It's hardly a kings ransom and before the whinge brigade start, I don't care. Buy the gear linkage, or don't. Just strikes me as pretty tight, but there ya go. :)

Tight I MAY be,but not stupid enough to pay 90 euro for a part I just got
for 10.63 +vat. ref. the oil changed about 200 miles ago i thought it might have been the problem.

why dont you get a second hand one in a scrap yard??

to be honest, 90 quid for a gear linkage from a main dealer is quite cheap. i'd say in their opinion its an obsolete part and they are doing it quite cheap at 90 in the hope you buy it so it isn't sitting in their parts department until the end of time.

aside from that, why the rant?

you have a notchy gear change. you have diagnosed the problem and its going to cost you €90 to fix it, so far as i can see it you have 2 choices -

    1) fix it.
    2) dont.

I think you miss my point. 90 quid for a gear linkage is rotten cheap if
you need one! I dont, just the bush. They wont sell one without the other. I bought a pattern part for a little over a tenner and the gear
change is good as new.Do you follow my logic now??
I simply dont like being taken for a clown.

Then don't treat them like clowns. Why do you expect them to keep obselete parts? They dont have the bushes because Nissan probably dont make them anymore. They probably have the linkage complete in their dead stock. Why do you expect them to take the bushes out of the gear linkage, leaving them with a gear linkage without any bushes, for a 14 year old car? How will they ever sell the linkage without the bushes?

Go see a scrap yard, and stop having silly unrealistic expectations about dealers.

Good point I suppose, funny how two people see the same thing so
differently. We`ll have to agree to differ on this one.Good luck.

In fairness I would of considered 90 quid cheap to and I wouldn't of taking the short cut of fitting just the bush I would of fitted the whole lot do it would keep u going for another 14 years because u can bet ur life on it that in a while down the road some other part will need changing sometimes quick and cheap isn't always best.

    Just my twopence worth

I don't get the rant. If Nissan don't do the bush separately then they don't do it separately, tough.

If you were able to the bush after-market for much cheaper, great. That the joy of the free market. I don't see it as a reason to rant about the dealer.
