Grindr and scruff are overhyped!

I downloaded the app just to see what all the fuss was about and to be honest, it doesn't really do it for me.

I'm in Galway but I can see guys as far away as Dublin so obviously these apps aren't very popular here. None of the guys are my type or age even so that doesn't help the matter.

Scruff is marginally better but only because you can see guys from abroad. It's so annoying that the guys I find hot are 10,000+Km away.

Maybe if I was in a big city (Dublin doesn't count) there would be more variety in guys? I dunno.

Nothing beats going out and meeting a guy anyway and having a chance to talk and drink with him and get to know him. To me, these apps make me very superficial which is really bad. I think a guy can become so much hotter if he has a great personality and knows how to have a good time;) but that's only really achievable in-person.

    What do you guys think?

Those apps are for people to meet someone to shag there and then or that night. I wouldn't use it for finding a potential partner, there are better websites and stuff for that, unless that is what you're looking for, in which case, then you'll have to find other apps to meet guys from! :)

There's all types on Grindr. I'm in Limerick and everyone on my immediate open app screen is within 7km. That's with a pretty tight age filter applied.

Fair enough in Dublin there's dozens within 5km, but that's where a fairly sizeable chunk of the population is.

Hornet is a new(ish) better functioning app, but there's f-all on it in Ireland.

I've just joined Plenty of Fish which also comes in app form and is a bit more rounded in terms of a variety of what people are looking for.

I don't want a relationship from these apps. I'm just saying that there is no one on them (thats near by) who does it for me. The selection of young guys is desperate as well btw.
But I get your point, and if I was out drinking I would probably be more likely to hook up with a guy just for a f*ck so I should really make sure its deleted the next time I go out! Nothing worse than beer goggles!haha:rolleyes:

I dunno Grindr is really strange at picking guys around you. Sometimes I can see as far as Dublin, so you would think I could see guys in Limerick too:confused:
I think Scruff is a right tease though!:D All those hot aussies precisely 16,400 KM away:(

Again, I'm just checking these apps out because I've heard so much about them. I'm not looking to utilise them, well not until I come across a guy I like and if I haven't been successful that night in the club, I might go looking for a bit of fun!;)

I've never used it for that purpose and have dated a guy I met through it.

I'm very good friends with a guy I met on it. Nothing happened, just friends. Meet up most weeks for lunch, coffee, whatever.

Friend of mine got a lovely date on it last week too, few drinks and a goodbye.
I think it gets an awful name, and sure there's probably dodgy people on it, but us normal people are there too! :D

Downloaded it to see who was a dorty hoor in my town then deleted it.

FYI the free version is no different than the paid really. Don't waste your money on it !

How do you set age limits on scruff? I'm sick of seeing the majority of guys being 30+. 25 is as high as I'll go atm.
I don't plan on upgrading my scruff because the only thing you can do is see a guy's "check-in" with other dudes.
Why would I want that? I don't want some guy's leftovers!
Seriously though, it's not even an enticing feature that warrants €3 p/m.
That said, I'm having loads of fun perving on guys hundreds of miles away. It's actually a great way to kill time!:D haha

I have downloaded Grindr and Growlr to see how I get on. Some nice guys on it but the majority are just messaging asking for no strings meets. I mean, I have it in my profile that I'm not on for hat, are people illiterate or ignorant?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 280 ✭✭coolperson05

People are just horny! lol But in fairness, we all get like that, but don't go perving around Grindr at 10 o clock! Leave it until at least 12! :P

    *I jest!

In dublin city centre my entire screen is less than 1-2 km away.loads within a few hundred metres-you'll get people in the same pub, street as you. its made for built up urban areas. (ive actually made friends off it (my wingmen) and seen a guy for while too)

on another note i fly to new york in the morning....better charge my phone. :)

Haha that's brilliant! Would it not be kind of hard to make friends though, considering you're looking for sex off each other?
I dunno, I was against the app but know I really want to use it. Next time I'm abroad or in a big city, I'll definitely try it out!

Not everyone is after sex on it. It's certainly not my number one priority. I've met maybe 10 guys off grindr. I've had sex with 1, and that was after a night out with him and getting to know him.

It's definitely possible to date using apps. In fact, I only use apps now, as opposed to websites. I find websites a colossal waste of time. I could waffle on about it all night, but I think websites are too much like a catalogue and people get spoilt for choice. With an app it's limited people, limited information/photos, and if you want to know anything you just have to start chatting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,293 ✭✭✭1ZRed

I've come around to it now actually and have a 'date' with a guy this weekend, and I have secured a tour guide for when I'm in London too:D
If you travel often,I can really see guys cleaning up using these apps!

A few of you guys said you got friendships out of the apps, but nearly all the guys I've chatted to we're looking for sex or trading pics and only just a few for actual chatting (which became sexual eventually anyway:p)
It seems like becoming friends with a few of these guys is harder than hooking up, at least from my experience anyway.

You said it; it's better to go out and meet people out & about and join groups etc.

Maybe one day you'll go to Australia too and will get your bit there.

I still stand by what I said about that. But I've come around to the idea of using the apps the odd time just for a laugh.
I still think its way more exciting to meet the guy out and getting to know him a bit. At least there's a bit of a chase in that, not like the apps where it's 4 messages in and it's like "do you wanna f*ck?" . Yeah I'm flattered but I like the hunt!:p

The guy I'm hopefully meeting in London is actually Australian. I don't know wtf it is, but I have a serious thing for them!
Maybe someday I'll get the chance to go there myself;)

Grindr isn't compatible with my phone. But I downloaded Maleforce and thought it was cool the way you could see other guys' exact location on google maps. I deleted it though because I thought it'd be too dangerous.

One thing that annoys me is all the Lols I get repeatedly to the point where it's frustrating.
I get two sets of lols, then a lmfao (all in succession) and I work past them but then I get a
    lm-F-ao and then I'm stuck there:confused:

Seriously, it's impossible to build off these responses and I wouldn't even consider myself that funny. The Americans are the worst for it too!

/End my little first world problem rant

I hope you made the most of it while it lasted anyway bud;)

i'd imagine your phone would explode in the front lounge...of course they are overhyped....each to their own...but i don't know why anyone would want to use these sites...go the old school way...just flash a smile on the street...that always grabs my ( and their )attention anyway:pac:

I've been disillusioned with dating and sex lately, which is another reason why I deleted it. I'd prefer just to setting down with someone instead of adhering to the bland promiscuity that these sort of apps offer.

I have resisted the urge up to this on the whole Grindr/scruff etc thing but I just ordered the new Samsung and I think when it comes in I might have a look this time

Mainly because a friend of mine has actually met someone on it

I've just ordered a new Samsung because I couldn't afford an iPhone. I like the idea of it because I am reasonably well known on gaydar etc and guys there seem to avoid me, so I am hoping grindr will enable me to meet someone .

I used to be the sort of person who loved having the newest gadgets and so on, and it might seem incredible that someone like me has never tried grindr before, but for some reason I have not been free to try it for reasons I won't go into here.

Is it true you can be really anonymous on grindr?

If you mean having no name and photo, then yes! You can turn of your location too.

However the gentle grindr community aren't very impressed by no picture! As a teacher I don't display my picture for obviously reasons..however people can be quiet displeased with that!

I get very awkward on Grindr. I need lessons on not being awkward. Once I said "lets cut to the chase... what are you on here for?" but autocorrect changed it to "lets cut and shave" or something ridiculous. I still love Grindr though.

I think chatting up the guys there is the easiest thing in the world.
You already know their motives so just have a laugh with them and you'll soon find it's like shooting fish in a barrel. It doesn't mean it's going to get them straight into bed but you can chat with them and pave the way for more if that's what you want.
Being a tease also really helps!:P

One thing I'll say is that lol's are very annoying to work off of. Especially if you keep getting them straight after each other.
It's like "so you think I'm funny, should we just go and fuck now?"

The iPhone is free on most packages on mine it was €49 surely even if you are just on the social you can afford that?

As for not being able to meet people of gaydar I think you just have to make the effort I go through phases of meeting lots of people and then phases of meeting no-one it usually comes down to my own lack of interest in making the effort to get off the couch or having the energy at the end of a long day.

The Samsung Galaxy 2 or 3? Either way, they're both considered as good as, in not better than, the iPhone 4S!! Besides, both Samsung and iPhone handsets are free with various provider packages.

I think one of the advantages is they run flash which is not available on the iPhone. This thread seems to be in danger of turning into that too frequent of games, phone-bore, and is about grindr and scruff.

My experience of grindr is that it just another route to finding someone else. Here in London it actually quite good because there are large numbers of guys, but somewhere like Dublin is less effective due to smaller numbers. I have noticed when in Dublin that many irish lads say they only want to "chat" on grindr, and then when one tries to chat to them their idea of chat seems to be to grunt back on one or two word sentences.

The real problem with all these sites is that if one is not careful they become an end in themselves, and not a means to an end. Go into gaydar any day in dublin, for example, and you'll see the core are largely the same group of people who have been there for years. The trick with all these sites is to use them as a means to an end and not as an end in themselves.
