    Hi all,
Anyone been to the Caribbean during hurricane season June to November.Im of the opinion that you are at low risk of being caught in a bad storm. We are restricted to only being able to go at the start of August or end of October. My gf is a little hesitant so if anybody has any expierience Id love to hear from them.
Also was wondering where is best to go.Was thinking Dominican Republic. We like to have a few things to do like diving, snorkelling, and maybe some where good inland to explore.Oh and a bit of nightlife nearby too if poss.
Am open to a cruise if anyone has any input on these.Max budget €1500 each for package.
    Many thanks all.:)

I went to the Dom Rep in June 2009 and Cuba December 2010. Both times I had no problem with weather. I had an amazing time in the Dom Rep, we stayed in Sousa but if I was ever going again I would stay in Cabarete. The nightlife was so much better there and more young people around outside the hotels. It very easy to book day trips when you arrive.

Cuba was nice but a different type of holiday more cultural. If you want an all inclusive deal the Dom Rep would be better as the food in the hotels is of higher quality. Have a look on Thomas Cook and keep an eye out for their sales. You can also pay a deposit and pay the rest closer to the departure date.

The hurricane season officially runs from June to November, but it rarely does so in reality. Hurricanes usually occur from mid August to late September/early October. They are rare in June, July or November, as conditions in the Atlantic are not favourable to their formation. If you plan a Caribbean vacation in those months, odds are you will be fine.

The great thing about going on cruise is that the ship can steer away from the path of a projected hurricane. If you are on an island, you are pretty much stuck there. A cruise will normally have a set itinerary of islands to visit, but it will have a back up Plan B of islands to go to if any the original ones are in the path of a bad storm.

If you do go, get good travel insurance before you go. Unlike European airlines, airlines that operate in/from the US and Caribbean do not have the obligation to compensate passengers for out of pocket expenses brought about by bad weather.

Another tip on avoiding hurricanes is to head south. The storms usually start off in the southern Caribbean and work their way north, getting stronger as they go. Places like Trinidad, Tobago and Antigua rarely get bad storms.

We went to Punta Cana in Dominican Republic in mid September 2010. No issues with hurricanes. Got a few crazy rain showers but they were over pretty quickly and it dried up really fast.

I would recommend the Dreams resorts. We paid 1400 each for 14 nights in Dreams Punta Cana. It's all inclusive, with 7 restaurants, unlimited free drinks (local + imported), free room service, free mini bar and no wrist bands. Rooms were lovely and food quality was good, we are picky eaters too. Pool was huge.

They had nightly entertainment which was better than expected and an on-site nightclub.

We did two excursions - zip lining and marine explorer which is swimming with string rays, sea kayaking, snorkelling and a massage.

La Romana is better for scuba diving I believe though.

    Hope that helps!
