Gap in Insurace Letter

So last November my wifes insurance was up, so I sat down to find the best deal. Browsed a lot of sites, rang a lot of people, got a lot of prices ... and eventually got a very competitive quote from Tesco car insurance. Happy out!

The car tax was out last month and as part of the online payment you need to input your insurance number. Out I popped to the car to get the disc and .... no disc. Why? Because I never bought the insurance! My wife and kids had been driving around for 4 months with no insurance :o. I got the quote but completely forgot to buy the bloody thing.

Naturally I immediately purchased insurance (with Tesco) and sent off the required documents. But now they have asked me for a Gap in Cover letter to explain why the NCB documentation only covers to Nov last year.

I'm worried that my wife will lose out on her NCB so I'm wondering what should I put in this letter? If necessary I'll pay the insurance back to Nov last year but if I explain what happened am I like to end up with her losing the NCB?

Any advice appreciated (apart from anyone calling me a fool - I know that already!)

I doubt you will be able to back pay the insurance. There's no way they would cover the risk.

Insurance wasn't renewed last November, no insurance since, NCB still stands. End of that story.

Driving without insurance the last few months is another story, not relevant to the letter though.

Letter saying "I didn't have an insurance policy for that period" with no mention of driving during the period, and be incredibly thankful you realised.

Its not unknown for people to not drive and hence not tax/insure their car for periods of time.

Nobody will ever back-insure you for 4 months.

What he said.... Why they want that info baffles me really.

I assume they suspect, that as he quoted with them during his renewal time but didn't purchase policy, so most likely he purchased policy with someone else. Maybe they think he claimed or his policy was cancelled for some reason, and that's why he needs a cover now. That's why they want it on writing why didn't he buy a policy at renewal time.
    Obviously I'm just guessing.

That would be well covered under assumptions and utmost good faith tbh.

A Gap in Cover letter is pretty standard with a lot if insurers if there's a gap of more than a month. What they want is a declaration that you had no involvement in any motor accidents during this period as this would have invalidated your NCB. Just state that you let the cover lapse as the car was no longer in use and that there were no accidents during this period. It's not completely true but so long as you are free of any potential claim during this period it should be sufficient.

Thanks a million for all the replies folks - and so quickly as well :)
I'll get that letter out to them tomorrow.
The back-dating of the insurance was a daft idea all right - I was just trying to come up with ways that the NCB wouldn't be affected.

    Thanks again.

id just tell them, car was off road due engine repairs, or lack of money to buy insurance, once you got money, you paying now.
