    First up

unplug and take battery out, leave for a few seconds, put back in and try again.

No look with removing the battery and rebooting.

HP laptops have a history of motherboards over heating and burning out, your description of the problem sounds like that.

Motherboard failures are not unique to HP, and there is not enough information to reach that diagnosis.

HP motherboard failures are well documented. My rudimentary assessment is from my own experience with a HP Pavillion.

Was is a 8 series Nvidia GPU? All manufacturers, even Apple had the problems with those chips burning out. I remember reading all these chips will burn out at some point, no matter how well cooled/ventilated they are

Join the Club. Pavillion dv6500t. My point still stands though: you don't have enough data to conclude thats the issue.

Did you try connecting your laptop to a monitor/tv and see if it outputs a signal? Failing that you could get a can of compressed air and dust out the inners of the laptop.

Had a similar problem and the amount of dust that was in the heatsink was unbelieveable. Had artifacts on screen but once it was cleared out everything was fine.
