Disable screen dim on HTC Desire for car navigation

I saw a setting somewhere to tell my HTC Desire not to dim the screen when it was on a charger but the other day in the car I had it on charge (orange light was on) and I put it on a windscreen mount but after 2 minutes the screen dimmed.

I don't want to permanently disable screen dim or it will chew up the battery when the phone is in my pocket but I'd like the screen to stay on when the phoneis on the charger and I'm looking at Google Maps in the car, can someone advise me if this is possible please.

Google Maps has a setting to keep your screen up.
I have found some satnavs don't keep it on all the time and some do

Could you remind me where this setting is please? Can't see anything to do with screen dim in 'Settings' when I start Google Maps.

the navigation app doesn't dim (unless you set it to), i'm not sure there's a setting in the actual google maps app

So if I just want to see a map with no navigation, I use the navigation app and not Google Maps and just don't bother setting a destination - right?

after a quick look on my own phone, yes, I think that may just work for you op

there's a maps option in the corner of the navigation app which you can press instead of inputting a destination

Thanks, tried it last night, left the map on the screen for >5 mins and it never dimmed.
