Unusual licence plate numbers (08 W 7XXX)

I've noticed a number of cars around lately with unusually high licence plate numbers, in the range 08 W 7XXX.

Waterford city plate numbers hit over 5,000 in 2000 when everyone had money and wanted the new plate, but I'd be surprised if they went much beyond 2,000 in 2008, so 7XXX is an unusual number.

Any idea what's behind this? Are these imports or something?

    Such a silly stupid idea.

All it does it highlight to every one that they are driving a higher spec import with a FSH rather than a paddy spec with little/no service history.

What was wrong with the old system??

SIMI was what was wrong with the old one. "Oh you don't want that higher specced, better serviced car for less. It's an import and therefore evil."

I'm sure there were plenty of imports registered by SIMI affiliated sellers prior to the introduction of this. It is laughable the power the SIMI have considering the completer lack of standards shown by some of their members in recent years.

This step is a pointless exercise.

No doubt... I searched the forum and even trawled through six pages before deciding that life was too short and that I'd just ask the question... ;)

    Thanks all for the replies.

It gives more information about a car via it's license plate, what's wrong with that? People who want imports will be able to tell quickly, without paying for a cartell check, and those who don't like imports will be able to keep away.

They won't as anything out there already imported will be old system. If they wanted to do this correctly they should have implemented it from all imported 2012 cars from 2013 onwards.

Sure all cars are imports anyhow since they stopped making the Shamrock! :D

the high numbers are just while a new system was being installed.
imports from 2013 onwards will be back to normal, (ie 2012 cars being imported)
There was a question in the Dail about this, and that is the response that was given from revenue

The VLC has full details of the import. first irish reg date and the old reg. so it's impossible to hide

It sounds like yet another scheme introduced as a result of lobbying by the Irish Motor 'Industry', like the requirement that you have to fit brand new tyres with the 'EU' mark when importing a car with perfectly good tyres from Japan.

Yep, this is part of the new import system where all imports are registered from a certain number up depending on the county. For example imports in Dublin start at 120000.

Any official links? ie what the numbers start at for each county and any other info?
