What are those things next to various roads, white posts, about 6 ft hight with a white cap and yellow sticker around the top. I presume they are measuring noise or pollution? But why, anyone know?

Which roads? Don't think I've seen any.

Quite a few around Wicklow, one on the N11 Northbound before Kilmac, one on a small road toward Newcastle, I'm sure I have seen others, they are usually very near the road side.

Two white polls with reflective tape on top between them? They're to alert construction traffic to overhead wires.

something similar on the old Carlow?Kilkenny rd, just past Whites pub on the Kilkenny side.

the sticker says "gas" and there are a couple more in a field just off the road also.

Im passing that way today so i ll have a look.

They're on main gas pipe routes at regular intervals, I presume some kind of breather or safety valve.

I've noticed a few between Naas and Ballymore Eustace. They are at the side if the road (as in in the ditch) and I can see one in a hedge in a field. Can't tell you when I first noticed them but they were not there last summer.

Noticed a few of these yesterday too. Sounds like a plausible explanation.

A 6ft white pole won't warn of many overhead lines. :)

They are breather valves on the North-South Gas Line. They have been there for a few years now.

The above are indeed breather valves for the gas line.

I've also seen similar poles used to mark the route a road takes above the snow line but never in ireland

The're replacements for the old high vis markers for aerial surveys of the high pressure nat gas grid, I think these have electronic locator sat nav
tracker thingies built in to them.

Noticed one of these on the Lucan-Clonee road recently and was wondering what it was

They are just marker posts on the gas transmission (high pressure) pipelines. Nothing to do with valves or "breathers".

They are all over the country - not just on road edges - on field fences too.
