Generally I find takers for anything and everything here:

They best part is they'll come to you at home or at work and take it away. Great for items the SVP mightn't have a use for.

If it has sensitive data then trash the HD and leave the rest of it ( free) into the Corpo yard in Liosban.

+1 it cannot be stressed how important this is. In fact don't bother dumping the hard disk at all. Perceptions of the sensitivity of data contained on devices such as hard disks varies significantly, as does the definition/process of "trashing / wiping".

Trash means physically remove hard drive and thwack with hammer. Or else put some unix on it and in so doing reformat completely.

I'd go with the first one, but it would want to be a good thwack ;)

Leave it overnight in a bucket of water afterwards Bobby. Then dry out and recycle. :)

on hard disk data security, check out the latest BBC Bang! programme, they go to town on a few disks... www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01fbfhg
Carrowmore recycling centre takes electronic stuff, not sure of the specific fee, if any.

If it's for just recycling then the council place in Liosban but sending it to Africa sounds good too.
