As the title says, I'm wondering what day people are starting back in August? We have a Croke park meeting tomorrow after school  and have to vote on it. Any thoughts?

Our staff voted for the opening day as per the department. Are not coming in early to make up hours etc because as the union rep put it if we do it voluntarily we are setting a precedent!

Exactly. To be honest I was all for coming in on the Friday until I realised that's it's the 24th of August and September 1st wouldn't be until the Saturday week!

As the teaching council is pushing for us all to do continuing professional development,in our own time,of course, we'll all be back early soon enough.

We haven't discussed it yet but it was Aug 24th last year, and a neighbouring school was back on the 23rd so I can just see it getting earlier and earlier.

The holidays are set out in a dept circular I can't find a link though. from memory they dont set out the start or end days for the school year. something general like opening on the week of sept 1st.

167 is the magic number. when this comes up ate our meeting I will be making it clear that I am available on all of those days bit not on the days set out as being holidays. unforseen circumstances my ass,

That's why we chose not to come back the previous week, as it is It's not sept 1st until the following Saturday, to come back even the previous Friday it would be the 24th a full week before september

Eh can you do this? Surely you have to go back when everyone else in the school does rather than chose your own calender?

A lot of my colleagues voted for Monday 27th so fingers crossed!

I retire this year...but I have to go back in August for a couple of days as the retirement doesn't kick in till September 1st!

Still...dossing around the staff room, not going to meetings, I can do all those 'idle civil servant' things we apparently do the whole time :D

We went back the 24th this year to get a Croke Park day out of the way. Never again. It was torture being back for the last week of August.

Think we're going back the 27th this year, but I don't want to think about it, we haven't even got our holidays yet.

I was referring to the days during holidays when we may have to open due to snowe etc..

aug 23rd... we were not given any option

Also voting on it, next week I think. Would rather it was the 27th at the latest. Id prefer to just stay the extra hour after school (which I usually do anyway) than spend at least 1 potentially beautiful day in school. Erosion of holidays notwithstanding...
