Hey, I am getting car in 2 months and I have few questions:

    1) I need to practice driving to pass my driving test in june, will insurance be super high if i insure car while on provisional or is there not a big difference?

    2) What is the procedure for buying car? like I am not insured for car of seller do they deliver it to my house or what?

    3) Are documents getting re-registered for my name or seller just hands in keys and that's it?

    4) What do I need to pay for? Like car, insurance what else?

Hi, I'm a learner driver and starting to look at cars myself.

re Insurance, it will be higher but some of them will give you some money back if you pass your test (e.g. Aviva and Zurich as far as I know will do this).

Unfortunately the insurance might be quite a bit higher than if you had a full licence (other factors are relevant such as your age, make and model of the car, whether you have named driver experience on someone elses insurance, and Zurich might take into account if you have had lessons).

There are some good tips here on buying a car

and some tips from the National Consumer Agency

Don't forget Tax, and whether it has a valid NCT, and you will need L plates before you can drive. And before you sit your test you have to check you meet the standards set out here http://www.rsa.ie/Documents/Learner%20Drivers/finalchecks.pdf

Forgot to say about insurance, if you get the licence plate number and make and model of the car, and know the engine size etc, you can get quotes from insurance companies before you see the car. Make sure all the information you give the company is accurate, and give them as much information as you can or as they ask for.

Once they have all your details on file, if you decide to buy the car you can ring them and get the insurance over the phone, once their phone lines are open. You will need a laser or credit card to do this.

They can send you the documentation later. You will have to send them a photo copy of your licence, and anything else they ask for, but they might give you a week or something to do this. They told me I could do this anyway. So you should be able to get insurance straight away this way.

There is documentation the seller needs to fill out as well (to do with vehicle ownership but I don't know the ins and outs of it).
