Seems as though a hardware fault has developed with the trackpad of my MacBook, and of course it's no longer under warranty!

Can anyone recommend somewhere to get it serviced at a reasonable price?

Have you tried contacting Apple directly yet?

I know that Mac is out of warranty but the worst they can say is no.

Apple and indeed their authorized repair shops don't do "reasonable prices". ;)

Maybe buying the Apple external bluetooth trackpad could be an option.

Yeah considering that alright, but would prefer a an actual fix on the laptop itself, but economics might dictate otherwise

Not sure about authorised agents over here but I've heard many positive stories about Apple Customer service .

No harm done in asking them directly.

Not saying it's bad, but they're certainly not known for "reasonable pricing". Paying a lot more for an Apple computer doesn't stop with the purchase, you know. ;)

I've used mactivate before and wouldn't have any problem recommending them.

However when I was getting a quote recently for a macbook air replacement top case/keyboard it came to €200.00 with Compu B whereas mactivate hadn't an exact figure I was told in the region of €380.00 or so.

I tried a bunch of other "mac specialists" for quotes and they all would not quote unless having the laptop in their workshop or were over €400.00.

I have an old macbook that packed up a few months ago. I got quotes for repairs (without having seen the laptop) from €75 up. I put it on the long finger, but recently was in Moore Street and saw lots of laptop repair places there.

I took it in, and a Chinese guy in a shop beside the lane (at side of ILAC centre) diagnised it as a software problem, and priced a full re-install with upgrades etc at €50. Job was done there and then i.e. I collected it after 2 hours and it is now perfect. As I had bought the macbook secondhand, I did not have the re-install disks so whilst €50 is a lot for something I should have been able to do myself, I was happy to pay it to get the macbook back working.

I'm pretty sure that this guy does hardware fixes too. Could be worth a visit.

If the machine is less than 3 years old, bring it back to whoever you bought it from and quote the Sale of Goods Act.

Unfortunately bought it in the uk 2 years ago, and don't have the receipt anymore

How did you pay for it?

    Credit card or cash?

Surely the OP of the thread you posted would have been told about the diagnostic charge in advance? That is pretty steep. I think labour charge for a successful repair in the figure that I was given above came to just under €100.00. They can't justify €70 imo for "testing" or a diagnostic report. That's plain extortion. I know a electronics technician who properly reconditions motherboards for similar money with a 3 month warranty.

Don't want to derail the thread further so Faker74 have you had any luck with getting the unit repaired?
