    Perfect example of it here:

Southampton have all but sealed promotion to the Premier League (not guaranteed I know but they play at home to already relegated Coventry next and have a bigger goal difference whilst West Ham have to win their next 2 games) whilst their rivals Portsmouth have been relegated to League One.

Only 4 years ago Southampton had been relegated to League One whilst Portsmouth won the FA Cup and drew with AC Milan in Europe.

Cue Southampton not getting automatic promotion now :pac:

    Other examples:

Newcastle getting relegated in 2009 and now they have a great chance of getting Champions League football in 2012.

Manchester City fighting it out for a mid-table finish in 2006 with the mighty Darius Vassell leading the line. They're now challenging for the Premier League title, have won an FA Cup and played in the Champions League.

"For every five pounds Celtic spend, we will spend ten," - David Murray 2000

Now liquidation is a very real possibility.

Suppose Rovers need to be mentioned 6 years ago relegated by us :D now going for 3 in a row and a perfect model for fan run club (wont work out) but atm they the No 1 club in ireland, in Europa League last year (fecking handy draw but im not bitter :D)

12 Months ago, Alex McLeish was slowly dragging a Birmingham based team into a relegation fight.

12 months on ... Oh Wait

I suppose your own team in a way Paully. Relegated with the lowest points total (at the time) ever in the PL, then have a disastrous start to the subsequent season in the championship. Many tip them to be in or around the drop, a new manager (Roy Keane) is then appointed and they go on an incredible run to win the league. Now firmly established as a mid-table team and will push for Europe next season imo.

Bham on top of the world after winning a trophy last season and seemingly safe at mid table they then go on as big a downward spiral as seen in the prem and are relegated.

Leeds' story in the early noughties is another.

I know you mentioned Newcastle but I'll use them in another example. Playing Uefa Cup football in 07 after finishing a very respectable 7th, two years later are relegated.

Ipswich finished 4th (wasn't it?) one season and relegated the next

Think Ipswich finished 5th behind Liverpool IIRC

In late 2006 the Republic of Ireland were beaten 5-2 by a rag tag Cypriot side. Tonight, having stormed out of their group (including a shock 2-1 last minute win against giants Spain) and having beaten England in the quarter finals, and France in the semis, they are tonight on the cusp of glory....

Oh sh1t, posted 2 months too early

Not too quick but the Conference play-off final last year.

    AFC Wimbledon v Luton.

Not that long ago (1988) Wimbledon won the FA Cup and Luton the League Cup.

Nice. An ambitious, open, entertaining scoreline.

I always laughed at this ad how even in his dreams McAteer only had us winning the world cup with a series of 1-0 wins.

Swansea are another good one. It's the beauty of football. Things may be crap right now but they won't always be crap. Things my be fantastic right now but they won't always be fantastic.

Chelsea 2003, on the brink on bankruptcy, were bought by billionaire Roman A, after finishing 4th and qualifing for the CL by beating Liverpool on the last match of the season.

Fast forward to 2012 and a few quid later, Chelsea will be looking to finish 4th by beating Liverpool on the 2nd from last game of the season (provided other results go their way!) :D

Liverpool went from title contenders to mid-table in 3 years.

    United 4-2 up.

4-4 in the space of two minutes.

May 1977 - Brian Clough guides Nottingham Forest to promotion to the top division. Barely 3 years later, they've won the league, two league cups, two european cups and a super cup.

Beat that with all your roubles Mr Abromovich :)

I suppose spurs fit the bill this season, comfortably in 3rd not knowing how to lose before Christmas to be favourites to clinch 6th in 2 months

Or the one that drives me to drink. Bottom of the table in December one year to champions league spot in one year. Why is that always mentioned? Spurs were in a bad place but had the Players to drag them out of it

24 years and a different football club, but apart from that, yeah it's amazing when you think about it...
