BTEA and internship.....?

    Hi folks,

Just a quick question - I am in receipt of BTEA and will be going into 4th year of my course in September. The following January I will begin a 36 week rostered internship before I can qualify. When we are interns we will be getting paid 50% of the starting salary of a midwife/nurse on the bottom rung of the payscale, with extra if we work nights, weekends, bank hols etc. I suppose I am wondering if I am allowed to keep my BTEA for this period? I will technically still be a student until the end of those 36 weeks. If they stop that payment, I can't afford to do my internship, as we may be sent anywhere for the internships and there will be travel and accomodation expenses to cover.

    Thanks!

As long as the work experience is an integral part of the course, and you provide a letter to the SW office stating that, you keep your BTEA. The earnings on the work experience do not affect your payment.

I'm in a similar situation but I am a qualified adult on my OH claim, \i have to complete co op from Jan to Aug 2013 again as compulsory part of my degree, the SW are aware I am a Full-time student, Would the same rules apply?

Yup. As long as the work experience is part of the course, you retain the BTEA for the duration of it.

Thanks for the replies, folks. Yes, the internship is integral - if we don't complete it, we don't graduate. Glad to hear I won't lose my entitlement!

What happens to partners claim in this case if they are unemployed. They are only receiving payment because their partner is on BTEA. Would they be means tested on Salary for the duration of the Internship and lose payment?
