Tablet, will it cover my laptop and smartphone needs?

My laptop is nearing the end of its life and I'm seriously bored with my smartphone (Sony Ericsson Xperia X8). Rather than buying a new laptop and smartphone, I was thinking of just buying a tablet to cover both needs. I rarely make phone calls or send texts (do most of my communicating online) as I mostly use my phone for apps- navigation, realtime bus/train info etc, so can keep the phone for calls/texts- how well will a tablet suffice instead of a laptop though? I've an external HDD for storage anyway, are they comfortable in terms of typing, watching movies, with the right stand?
I'd be looking at an Android model anyway.

EDIT: Saw there's an Android forum, will post over there! Cheers
