How do you find out if a summons is genuine?

    Hi Everyone:),

Got a summons but it seems to not be signed or stamped apart from 2 copies of signitures on bits that I`m not sure are the actual summons. Is there some way to contact the court to see if in fact it is genuine, who do you contact?

Summons is for eflow, it says civil summons - I heard (but would assume its incorrect doesn`t seem logical) that they cannot seek penalties on fines in the civil court?

I have been in touch with them and will be defending - the charges go back to 1 1/2 years ago and I didn`t receive any letters in between so was a bit shocked to receive summons

    Thanks!

1 1/2 years ago? wow, would have thought the summons should have been served closer to the offending date.

    Sorry what is "e-flow"

Assuming you are talking about a District Court summons, many of these are entirely computer generated, some very badly printed, illegible, and hard to photocopy.

Some DJs wont look at them and dismiss them without being even asked.

    Some will consider them.

Some debt collection agencies issue notices which are made look like summonses, but have no validity

It should have references on it on which you could check.

If it is a High COurt Summons it should have High Court references on it which could be checked in the Central Office High COurt.

In the UK there is a specific offence of making documents appear to be from a court or otherwise ' official ' in nature - is there such a law here ?

Section 11 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997 possibly.
