    Hi all,

Advice needed please regarding new tyres for my road bike.

What would you recommend as best for Irish conditions?

It's only for training and sportives and I have no interest in racing.

My priorities would be grip and puncture protection. I don't mind if they wear a little quicker as I don't do massive mileage. Preferably in 25mm.

I usually try and support local but I'll gladly buy online this time as the prices in the shops seem excessive.

I've been happily running Continental Gatorskins for the last couple of years. Good grip and protection for a pretty reasonable price...

Yup, I've gatorskins on two of my bikes (25mm & 23mm respectively), I find them excellent. I definitely notice issues with grip in the wet but if you're not racing just take it easy cornering.

continental GP 4 seasons, last forever, great grip even in wet, tough as nails and fairly fast.
michelin krylion carbons, last forever, good grip, tough as nails and fast too

    Cheers guys,

I've heard stories of the Gatorskins being iffy in the wet which is a definite turn off as I'm not a confident bike handler at the best of times.

The GP 4 seasons sounds good though.

Thanks all for replying and if anyone else has a suggestion I'd love to hear it too.

I've had gatorskin hardshells on and found them to be fine in the wet.

Armadillos are definitely very skittish in wet weather and standing water, they're also very heavy, but they are incredibly tough.

I recently placed worn out gatorskins with krylions and have been suitably impressed by them - quick, grippy and no punctures in the 600+km of riding I've done since they went on.

I've been using Gator skins and GP4 Seasons without any problems wet or dry. I do prefer the Continentals in the wet when racing but that could just be the power of the ads for the car tyres too.

Just fitted a pair of rubino pros after I moaned about multiple punctures on another thread. 80k there and no probs, rainy up and down Howth with no slippage issues so happy enough so far.

    But most importantly they're yellow.

    Thanks all,

I just bought a set of Panaracer Extreme Evo 3 from Wheelworx for €25 each.

I wanted to buy the GP 4 seasons but cash is a bit tight so opted for the cheaper option instead. I looked up a few reviews and they seem to be OK, let's hope I'm not eating my words this time next week.

Panaracer Ribmo for hard wear, good grip and very good puncture protection. 1 puncture in around 7,000km on a set. I run them at 110PSI.
Vittoria Rubino pro for very good grip, speed, colours and good puncture protection. No punctures in around 4,000km so far. I run these at around 120-130PSI.

+1 on Panasonic panaracer. I had the evos and after nearly two years changed to the closer model. Only reason I changed was because the back got a buckle but still didn't puncture! Only had max two punctures with them in races, sportifs and training. I run at 120 - 130 psi. Fast and grippy tire and v strong.

I find krylions a good tyre from a grip and rolling resistance perspective. They don't puncture often but when they do I have found they tend to split badly and need to be replaced. I won't get them again

Gatorskins are a good commuting tyre but suggesting you use them on a bike you actually ride for fun is ridiculous. Their grip is not atrocious like Armadillos but it is not exactly good either. And they feel dead compared with a decent tyre.

Sticking with Continental, GP4000S will probably wear a bit quicker but much better grip and I haven't found I get any more punctures. Schwalbe Ultremo are also excellent and my favorite tyre. Another one I have had good results with is the Maxxis Columbiere, which I got very cheaply. All of these are available in 25 and have excellent grip with decent puncture protection and good ride feel.

The Gatorskin has good puncture protection and is not as terrible as other tyres primarily marketed for this quality but if you actually ride your bike for pleasure get a better tyre. I use the Gatorskin on several bikes but would not put them near my road bikes any more.

continental gps 4000. great for avoiding punctures

I have been running the GP4000s for about two years, they are great, roll quick, super grip BUT do not last long on the appalling roads of West Cork (approx. 2500-3000k). They are also prone to side wall punctures. I had a new set on recently with less than a 1000k on them and got a [another] sidewall puncture that ripped the tyre rendering it useless. Expensive!
Reluctantly I have now fitted the 4 seasons, they are noticeably slower but at least they have sidewall protection. I have only had them for two weeks so cannot comment on how good/bad they are in the wet.

Tried Ultremos before and they are a lovely tyre - fast, grippy etc.

Puncture resistance was excellent, but they wore out in less than 2,500km - after about 1000km they were looking pretty rough and I thought I'd start getting punctures, but in their defence until I took them off I only ever had once puncture and that was from walloping into a discarded paving slab in the middle of a bike lane!

Oh, and most important - they looked greeeeeeat!
