I think the Sky card you mentioned is a FTV (Free To View) card. I have one of these. I was going to get rid of Sky but the problem was the Irish EPG only had some channels available via the EPG, the rest (like ITV, etc) were got via the 'Other Channels' button which made it awkward. This problem only ocurred with a Sky HD box - a ordinary Sky box works better as all you have to do is pull the card out and the EPG reverts to the UK one.

With a HD box you can get a FTV card and this will give you the UK EPG with alot of the FTA channels. The channels are more accessible on the EPG. BBC1 is at channel 101, etc. I don't have it set up at the moment so I can't remember the full layout of the channels. But I do know you get a 7 day EPG, you can't use the 'Other Channel' button and you can't record.

Someone else here might fill you in better.
