What is a 'recognisance' (spelling?) please - something to do with asking for an appeal?

In court, when and how should one be asked for?

Recognisance is basically a fancy word for Bail.

You enter into a recognisance with the court that you will do some act (turn up in court on a set date), if you don't a sum of money will be forefeited by you to the courts for failing to show up. It's also not just in relation to appeals courts.
