Mayo TD blames "fornication" !!!

NEWLY elected Mayo TD Michelle Mulherin today blamed "fornication" as the single greatest cause of unwanted pregnancies in Ireland.

The 40-year-old Fine Gael deputy employed the archaic term in the Dail in relation to the vote on a bill to allow abortion in Ireland to save the life of the mother.

The Private Members' Bill on abortion was rejected by 109 votes to 20.

“In an ideal world there would be no unwanted pregnancies and no unwanted babies. But we are far from living in an ideal world,” Deputy Mulherin said.

"Abortion is murder, therefore sin, which is the religious argument, is no more sinful, from a scriptural point of view, than all other sins we don’t legislate against, like greed, hate and fornication. The latter, being fornication, I would say, is probably the single most likely cause of unwanted pregnancies in this country.”

The term ‘fornication’, which means consensual sexual intercourse by two people not married to each other, is regarded as being loaded with moral and religious significance.

It derives from the Latin word fornix, which means vault – a euphemism for brothel as prostitutes could be solicited in the vaults in Rome.

Ms Mulherin was elected to Dail Eireann for Fine Gael in Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s home county.

The Bill had been proposed by Socialist TD Clare Daly, of the technical group, to legislate for the 1992 ruling of the Supreme Court in the X-case to make abortion legal for pregnant women whose lives are at risk.

Patrick Nulty, who has already lost the party whip, was the only Labour TD to support the bill.

Fianna Fáil voted against and Sinn Fein in favour.
