Windows Updates on Startup

Hey, can anyone tell me if it's possible to have Windows download and install all important updates as soon as a pc is turned on, rather then at a specific time?

We have a team using Windows 7 on a VMware (standalone), and they connect to the clients system via a VPN. To connect correctly to the VPN, all available Important and any security related Optional updates need to be installed. Users have to manually check this every morning, and run the updates themselves. It's not a huge problem, but something that they've been complaining about recently.

As it's on a VMware, we can't keep them in sleep or hibernate, and have them turn on to automatically download the updates. Setting a specific time also doesn't work, as they have different starting times.

So, is there any way to have Windows check for updates, and install them before the user even gets to the desktop?

    I found this:

    http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/76696-there-command-line-force-check-up-update.html

To install important updates automatically from command line:
    Code:
    C:\Windows\system32\wuauclt.exe /detectnow

    OR

    %windir%\system32\wuauclt.exe /detectnow
Automatic updates must be enabled in order to be able to use this command.

Create a batch and have it run on start.

Easy, just set the time (default 3 AM) to a time when the system is normally off, Windows will then check for updates automatically immediately at startup.

Will either of these changes automatically install the updates, or will it just prompt the user to install them once they login? I know it sounds like a minor detail, but they keep forgetting to check and then complain when they can't connect. Hoping for something that will install them without any input from the user.

Nm, looks like that link above sets them to automatically download.

    Thanks.

    Prompted via Tray Notification.

If you want a silent installation, you'll need a server to download the updates, distribute uptates via WSUS and Windows Update Agent to be installed on the client(s).

You can turn on automatic install.

    Open Windows Update
    Change Settings (on Left)
Important Updates to "Install Updates Automatically"

If needed check the Give me Recommended Updates the same way I receive important updates.

    Sorted.

Thanks for the help so far.I've got a batch file running to check for updates and install them. The only problem is that if it finds updates, it's not selecting them to install. So when i run the install command, nothing gets installed.

Is there any way to automatically select any Important/Optional updates? Install Updates Automatically is already selected in the updates settings.
