Does anyone else find it incredibly depressing reading through the comments on this website/app?

We're all addicted to it but online commentary is generally very depressing.
It can be quite valuable when people are looking for specific information or support like a motoring message board site or rollercoaster.ie where they talk about pregnancy etc.
However the minute a thread turns onto a general interest topic or a news item like on thejournal.ie it rapidly becomes filled with vested interests, abuse and ignorant comments.

Online, people have no capacity to understand somebody else's viewpoint or have a reasoned discussion.

Yeah, it's just such a pity, as I do think the app in particular is of good quality. And if the comments weren't mostly so ignorant, negative and aggressive, it could be quite an interesting place to contribute to debates on current issues.

When I go to somewhere like Broadsheet.ie and have a look at the comments posted there, it's like a breath of fresh air. Usually very witty and intelligent for the most part.

Advocates of capitalism are very apt to appeal to the sacred principles of liberty, which are embodied in one maxim: The fortunate must not be restrained in the exercise of tyranny over the unfortunate.
