Removing coal dust from small room

I have a cloakroom where the old floorboards have a thin layer of coaldust on them that gets onto whatever's around them. I believe hoovering ash from a fire is a no-no due to the ashes (if cooled) still being possibly too fine for the hoover bag to hold them.

Is it the same for coal dust? I'm not sure how to remove it otherwise as any brushing I do of the floor is throwing all the dust in the air. I figured a damp cloth might work but these are very old, worn floorboards so if I could attempt hoovering, that would be fantastic.
