    Hi all,
I'm going bananas here! After a while all my media players just stop working.
YouTube videos won't play, Win Media Player stops working, every damn thing.

Sometimes a restart fixes them for varying amounts of time. Sometimes not.

All players, Flash etc. updated. Win XP, 7yr old Dell desktop.

All ideas will be entertained at this stage.

    Thanks & cheers ~

Try deleting and re-installing your graphics card drivers?

Could try remove all codecs and re-install them.

do you have a codec pack installed?

if so, try completely removing it and re-installing a newer one. i've been using the CCCP one recently and it seems decent enough.

might also be time to do a complete clear out of your browser, history, cookies, temp files etc. give ccleaner a go and see if that makes any difference, but remember to make a note of any passwords before you do, or exclude them from the cleanup.

As far as I can tell, we have a winner! New driver for the GFX card and seems to be holding up..

    Thanks for the help ~

30mins later, death! Cue the hair pulling, swearing, tantrums, the lot...

Won't even play Soundcloud etc (non video). Just trys to play as it loads, skipping as it loads...

There's something odd going on - you shouldn't be having that kind of problem. I'd suggest a bit of maintenance:
    • Run Windows Update and make sure you're up to date.
    • Run a full scan with your preferred anti-virus software package.
    • Download and install the Secunia Personal Security Inspector, then run a scan. Install any missing updates it tells you about, and if possible remove any EOL software.
    • For each browser you use, go to Adobe's Flash and Shockwave pages to check whether the plugins are installed and working correctly. Install/reinstall them and check if the behaviour changes.
    • Install VLC, including the browser plugin option, and test streaming media playback.
    • If you haven't already done this, create a new account (ideally with user rather than administrator privileges) and test whether the issue is the same in the new account.

Hopefully these steps should either resolve the problem or at least give you some better indication of what's causing it.
