VW Golf Mark V Clutch Problem (I think)

Over the past week, I have noticed that when I turn the car on and its in neutral that there is a fairly loud cranking noise. This noise goes when the clutch is pressed, is this solely a clutch issue? Does anyone have any ideas?

I have rang a VW main dealer, for a quote on the clutch replacement.

    - Clutch - 230 plus vat
    - Labour - 4 hours @ €70 an hour plus vat

so all in all about 700, does this sound ok?

Now they dont have a slot to even do a diagnostic til Tuesday (Im working in Wexford and have our other car, my heavily pregnant wife is stuck at home in Dublin, I dont really want her to drive it)

Does anyone know any good indies in the Lucan area, that could do the job?

    Cheers,

Are you sure its not the starter sticking to the flywheel? Common enough prob on the golf. Can usually be cured by removing the starting motor and cleaning with brake or carb cleaner.

Sounds like the clutch release bearing is on the way out

It sounds to me like the springs on your clutch plate have gone.

The cost of the clutch seems reasonable, labour costs might be nearly halved if you have the clutch replaced with an indy mechanic.

Is it a 1.4 or 1.6 petrol? It could well be the gearbox as they are a known weak spot with bearings failing on them. It happens on a lot of the VW family of cars.

Hi, Similar to the OP, I have also heard a grating noise from my VW golf. It is a 2004 mk V 1.9 TDI golf, 105 BHP, engine code BKC. From what I can notice, the sound does not always happen or isn't always loud enough to hear from inside the car but I do notice it relatively often. I got under to have a closer listen and the grating seems to be coming from around the bell housing from what I can tell.

Do these Golfs have a known weak spot which might be causing this sound? Any ideas on what it might be?
