Have been looking at these for the last few days, seem like a nice car, I want good fuel economy they seem to offer that and are a good price for the year. The engine seems to have won a few awards as well, the one I have been looking at the 90BHP version with a 6 speed gear box, a little less economical than the 70BHP version but over all still better than the 1.2Petrol. Any thoughts?

    Go for it.

Be careful with manufacturers claiming that their car can do 70+ mpg, these kind of mileages are usually achieved under optimum conditions with the car traveling at a constant ~80kph. If you're driving at 120kph, then expect your mpg to drop to 40/50mpg.

Reliable engine for sure. 90 bhp version with 6 speed is a nice combination. Timıng chain instead of belt. Grande Punto is light enough to have some poke when needed.

Only thing I dont like about this engine is low torque until turbo kicks in due to 12xx cc engine size. It is not a big deal if you don't do city driving too much

I am trying to decide if it is worth my while trading up, I am currently driving a 1L polo, I do atleast 90 miles a day on week days, it was never very economical but the rising price of petrol is killing me. I know that diesel is rising with it but even if I could save €20 a week it would make a big difference in my budget as a student. I do around 50% b roads and 50% A roads.

Will the cost to change wipe out any perceived "savings"?

Very true, I have thought about this I haven't had time to sit down and do the maths, also diesel comes at a premium. The 1.2 petrol version of this car can be gotten for around 3.5k where as the diesel comes in closer at around 5k. I just wanted to get some more info on the punto, what I could expect with regards to economy etc.

I've heard 1l Polos are very economical cars. Loads of people are looking to buy them so they can save a few quid on fuel costs over other cars...:)

Hi I have 1.3 multijet 2009 grande punto ! Getting fantastic mpg mostly motorway driving sitting at 120 will give 62mpg ! When just doing short spins around town it will drop down to around 56/57mpg ! Great car with plenty of room and boot space :)

Thanks very much for the reply, they really do seem like a great car, as much as I want to I don't think I can stretch my budget, thinking of getting a panda for now and a punto in a couple of years time when they have dropped in price. I will see though because if I can stretch my budget the they would be the car to have I think.

    They do? :D

Edit: Thank you Colm, you are right, although having had a look on dd and carzone they seem tO be very few and far between, only one I could find was on carzone, only thing was it was a car van. Other wise it would have been perfect. Will keep and eye out anyway, thanks again.

Our friends over the pond in england would have a lot more, if that is an option?

I will look into it, doubtful as an option though, would have to be a very special car to be going through all that bother for.

It would really just take a day if you left in the morning. England ain't that far away.

Then again with ones like this around: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3407680

asking 4.6k, but I'm sure 4.2 would take it if you offered cash. Check out the history on it and you should be onto a winner?

I know it isn't that far away but it's just a hassle really plus I would have to get someone to come with me to drive me there and what if the car turns out to be a shed, wasted day!

Seen that one myself, lovely example really, trying to sort out finances and figure out how much I will have to spend.

Maybe if you're just commuting yourself and a ladyfriend or some such, getting a 1.3 multijet van would make more sense? How much do you have that many people in your car? Could make more sense!

Ah but I am a lady :), it is usually just myself in the car but still wouldn't go buying the van, much prefer being able to throw down the back seats and life them back up again much more versatile.

Sorry for implying that you were a man!

At least you're being practical so!

Another alternative is the opel corsa 1.3 diesel, similar idea?

    Same engine too

Been looking at the corsa as well, certainly wouldn't be adverse, would I be right in saying that the engine gives bother in these though, possibly due to the large service interval, that's the only reason why I was looking more towards fiats as opposed to corsa, which are a fair bit cheaper.

I would defiantly go with fiat, this is my 3rd fiat and didnt have one bit of trouble with any of them!! Just make sure and keep them well serviced and maintained !! I had Audi BMW Toyota 206 and by far my fiat grande punto has been the most reliable and with diesel great mpg !! The city button also makes parking so much easier ! Happy car hunting :)
