Kilroy did insist on popping up in the most difficult of locations

In the late '80s he had a very close shave in the Ardoyne

AFAIK he was last reported as being on the wrong end of a very nasty waterboarding in 2006.

    Olddog

    What next ? ( Peanuts? )

Shouldn't it be Kilroy woz 'ere (apostrophe optional)

Boo! I did one of those pictures using the keyboard of a Kilroy woz ere, but when I hit submit it went all peculiar. How do people do those really complicated ones?

Kilroy was Irish as far as I know, and went global many years ago. I saw a documentary on archaeology once, the presenter was in a cave in France and guess what, Kilroy had been there before them! It was in that documentary they explained that the original Kilroy had been Irish. I know no more than that except I always thought it was 'Kilroy wuz 'ere' in the UK and 'Kilroy was here' everywhere else. :D

    Hark hark
    Hear hear
    I jump for joy -
    'Cause I was here
    Before Kilroy.

This and likeminded verse I've seen written in various construction site loos across Europe ....... usually accompanied by a pencilled drawing of Chad with nose hanging over a block wall.

The words "KILROY WAS HERE" and a simple drawing of a face peeking over a fence were written on any surface US servicemen came near during World War II, usually meant to be the mark of the first American GI to arrive at that place. Kilroy's face was so ubiquitous wherever American servicemen went, especially in Europe, that rumors popped up saying Hitler himself issued orders to find Kilroy and that Stalin came face-to-face with Kilroy inside a Potsdam outhouse.

In this context, the text and the drawing were inseparable; but they actually have separate origins. Alternate accounts exist, but the most widely accepted origin of "KILROY WAS HERE" trace to James J. Kilroy of Halifax, Massachusetts, USA. On 24 December 1946, the New York Times wrote:

During the war [Kilroy] was employed at the Bethlehem Steel Company's Quincy shipyard, inspecting tanks, double bottoms and other parts of warships under construction. To satisfy superiors that he was performing his duties, Mr. Kilroy scribbled in yellow crayon "Kilroy was here" on inspected work. Soon the phrase began to appear in various unrelated places, and Mr. Kilroy believes the 14,000 shipyard workers who entered the armed services were responsible for its subsequent world-wide use.

So I guess, in a sense, Kilroy was Irish ;)

I read this, replied, tried to draw one of those over the fence things, then went to bed. Just as I fell asleep I thought - that wasn't Kilroy, that was - somebody with a short name. Now I can't think what it was and its annoying me.

So, the little guy looking over the wall with his fingers on either side, who was he?

Edit: Got it! Chad - he of 'wot no coal' or other goods. Probably an entirely English phenomenon.

    Kilroy_was_here_%28re-drawn%29.gif

Bit early for my time....I did learn from one Mr. Bob Geldof though that phone wreckers were idiots...Funny how that doesn't seem to matter much these days...not high on the agenda or nuttin...away from the front pages and the like...

He obviously had some English lessons since he wrote Kilroy woz ere.

That's what I was bleating about earlier - that's Chad, not Kilroy!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,876 ✭✭✭Spread

Yes, I flipping knew that but I got confused :o. This is happening with increasing regularity. Incidentally, Chad is one of the few drawings that I can do. I just can't seem to get the measurements right ......... so small dog, big head, tail too long/short, legs that don't look like legs etc. :D

For heavens sake, Spread, if that is the extent of your confusion, you are not in the ha'penny place :D

Just a big fat backside hanging over a wall will do :D

    An OldGoat Woz 'ere?

A long beard hanging over a wall?

A Ramette and Jellybaby Woz 'ere?

Two biddies gossiping over a wall?

    A BBDBB Woz 'ere?

A bottle of a substance not to be named sitting on a wall?

    A Spread Woz 'ere?

No wall just a hole in the ground?

    Cicero Woz 'ere?

A sign saying the wall has been removed for safety reasons due to falling masonry?

    The Daily Elliptical View

In an interview with Tom Tomacoute of Zombie Publishing, OG (a nom de plume for an extremely moderate Moderator) has finally put the myth of Kilroy being on boards to bed. It is understood that Kilroy has been living in a tree stump in Newcastle West and masquerading as, er, an imposter called Killjoy. Because of this, I have no hesitation in cancelling my subscription to the local Wine Wholesalers.

Well really how much can you say about Kilroy? He woz 'ere, or was here. And now appears to have gone. I suppose with the ready availability of the internet for memes and suchlike there is no need for scribbles on walls to communicate in-jokes.

RIP Kilroy, gone the same way as Chad and another one that is nudging the edge of my memory something to do with Uncle Sam and describing things as US, meaning useless? Does anyone know what I am talking about?

Where I work and throughout the RAF (and as far as I know a lot of other places too) the term US (more properly U/S) means Unservicable. or not working, and in extreme cases, useless)

It is standard procedure to declare something as either 'S' or 'U/S'

    'S' = usable or 'Serviceable'

Sure why not, they're always asking me to swear in a court of law.

    ;)
but being an atheist, I always affirm instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,640 ✭✭✭✭OldGoat

Last time I was on a jury and asked to affirm rather then swear on a bible a priest in the court blessed himself and mumbled a prayer. I was both affronted and amused at the same time.
I was tempted to rub my index fingers together when he took the stand and mutter "hex, hex, hex"

Oh, yeah...Chad. Whats that an abbreviation of? Or is it a true name?

I think (but not 100% sure) that Chad is what the Americans shorten Charles to.

    http://www.bdb.co.za/shackle/articles/chad_kilroy.htm

This is an interesting website, apparently there was a link between Chad and Kilroy - in spite of my protestations to the contrary, though it was the face that was shared. 'Kilroy was here' on one version and the other was Chad (or Mr Chad) saying 'Wot no ......' sugar usually or coal.
