    1) However in you are living in NI ONLY (and not the rest of the UK)

you can currently get RTE1, RTE2, RTE News now etc (but not TV3 nor 3E nor TG4) on the new Saorsat system, without a subscription to Sky

There is a seperate saorsat thread. Basically 100% coverage of NI (as far as we can tell)
You probably need a 80cm/1.1m Solid dish and a special LNB.

    2) If you are living in the North there may also be spillover from the south (transmitters on the border).

    Check here for more information:

    http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/coverage-checker/coverage-map/
You need a TV compatable with Saorview (most Freeview HD boxes will work too)
Full coverage will not be reached until October when the analogue switches off and digital goes high power. There is also a block northwards on some transmitters south of the border which will be lifted in October.

    3) If you are living in a part of the north that does not have overspill terrestrially there also will be broadcasts from a few sites in the North. To receive these you need to have a Freeview HD (only) box and live close to the mast as they will be low power. These have not been launched yet, probably later this year or early next year

    See here:

No TV3 nor 3E with this option, but you will get TG4

So basically there are lots of ways now to get RTE for free in NI. Each option is different. Overspill from the south gets you the most channels.

If you post you approximite location we can advise further.

Regarding a subscription to Sky, the Sky ROI subscription gets you the most channels, (more than an NI subscription) but it's more expensive.
