Celica Insurance mix up??

Well I decided to sell my 2001 520 bmw, and decided to downgrade to something with a smaller engine and slightly cheaper tax, not to mention a much cheaper to buy car in the first place... My decision? a mid-late 90's Toyota Celica.

I've gotten quotes a few years back for these cars (all models, including the GT-4 model)

I rang up Axa today, and no matter what celica I tried to change the policy to, they claimed that ALL of them were GT-4s and that they couldn't quote me until I was thirty years old and had 5 years NCB, blah blah blah....

I've since tried a few of the cars I was looking at, every single one being the GT 2 litre model, (NOT the GT-4 turbo model) and every company online seems to recognize the cars registration numbers as a GT-4???

Has something changed recently that I was unaware of?? I can manually fill out the forms online to the exact car I'm looking to insure, and theres no problems at all, but if I try to just use the Reg of the car, it pulls the details as a GT-4s???

Axa have said to me that I can bring the car down to my local Axa office with the log-book etc. And they will be happy to change my policy over to it then, but how can I if i'm not insured to drive it down to them in the first place???

Am I the only person who is having this problem?? can someone please advise me on what to do?? I find it hard to believe that every 2 litre celica brought into this country was registered as a GT-4? it wouldn't make any sense?

    Please help?

    Thanks
    P

Have someone else drive it down to them. Alternatively, you could ask them to temporarily cover the car while you make the trip.

I'll have to buy the car first, thats whats worrying me., the way things are these days, I'd expect them to make up an excuse about why they won't insure me on the other models! But thanks for the suggestion.

Has anyone had to do this before? Am I at risk of them making up an excuse for not covering me on a car that I'd have just bought?

I'm convinced this is only a very recent thing, as I had quotes on the exact same model of car before and the registration numbers never came up as a GT-4 on their systems.... I thought all of this would stop when I turned 25, not to mention my 8 years of claims free driving... sick to death of insurance companies.

I tried a few online already, and its the same problem with all of the car registrations, they all come up as a GT-4 for some reason, try it yourself sure and see, choose any two litre Celica and for whatever reason they all now come up as a GT4.

Another frustrating issue with getting the car down to Axa is that the car will be uninsured at the time, not many people I know that can drive any uninsured cars, otherwise I could just drive the car down there myself...

The problem seems to be on the database they pull their information from, its the same database the website uses, so no difference in calling them...

Hi if you look for a 92 or 93 you should be able to get classic car insurance on it once it is 20 years old & you own or are named on another main car policy.

It is just a database which is missing the correct car type. If you present the VLC to the office, they should be able to manually adjust your policy accordingly.

I had a similar situation with regards a mix up. Was looking to buy a VTi CIvic and every insurance company I rang insisted that the license number I was giving them suggested it was a jap import. It wasn't obviously enough but I found myself like you, not wanting to buy until I was sure I could insure it. In the end, ringing around to everybody until finally one of them didn't try to tell me it was a jap. Try Aviva, they were who I eventually got through to. Be persistent and good luck, they're a lovely car!

I could understand that if it was just the one car I was looking at, but i've literally tried about 10-15 celicas with the 2 litre engine? Will the insurance company update the car type on the other database to prevent me having trouble again once I leave Axa and move to another insurance company?

Cheers for that, yeah it's just so frustrating that all I want to do is give up at this stage, I've literally followed all of their rules for so many years now, and still I get treated badly by most companies, I've never claimed once, and always paid whatever car I had to to get it insured.

The only reason I'm trying to stay with Axa was that i'm halfway through a policy right now and don't want to lose out on another years NCB just because of a silly technicality... :(

AFAIK, the database is provided by a 3rd party, and multiple companies might use the same 3rd party for this so you may come across the same issue with different companies. Ring them to ensure them it's not a GT4, and cross your fingers that you might get someone who knows what they're talking about!

Also, see if they'll quote you without the reg number?

I'd imagine it has something to do with the fact that very few Gt4s are actually registered as Gt4s. There was a big fiddle a few years ago with jap imports being registered as lesser models to avoid high VRT fees. Imprezas, evo's , Gt4s, civics etc were all being cleared as bog standard models and being taxed/insured as same. I've seen plenty of 1.6 and 1.8 Sti imprezas and evo's :)

Axa are gone funny recently, I rang them about transferring my insurance to a 535d BMW and they refused to cover the missus as she was under 30! Even though I've transferred over to bigger engined yokes a few times with the missus included.

They have told me that the database they use is the National Registration Database, which makes it even more confusing as that could be the cause of a lot of problems for people looking to get insured on cars!

Every single company quotes me when I manually type in the details of the car (Axa included), but I still feel a little untrusting as to whether or not Axa will come up with another excuse! They genuinely have terrible customer care as far as i'm concerned, not much worse than most insurance companies, but definitely the bottom of the list as far I can make out.

I'm going to get the car anyway, but as I said, I'd like to keep with Axa just for the last few months to get my well earned additional NCB!

Yeah its a bit mad lately alright! I've gotten quotes on a lot more ridiculous cars before (and been happily insured on them in the past) but for some reason they seem to want to find ways of refusing insurance from more and more people on anything larger than a 1.6! Its bad enough we have to pay a fortune on tax for anything around 2 litre+ why can't the insurance companies just cut us some slack for once! Sure they're well aware we're all broke :P

Axa are the last company I would ever bother ringing if you are trying to insure a Japanese performance car like a Celica. For people who deal with cars all day every day they know shockingly little about this sector of the market... Also I tried them a couple of times when I was looking to buy the Integra and was looking at other cars such as a Type R Accord and to be honest I got tired of their attitude towards these cars. They dont want to deal with these cars and will say pretty much anything to make you go away (and they are not the only company who seem to think like this).

I couldn't agree more with you, the only reason I'm stuck with them now at the minute is due to them giving unusually cheap quotes on large engine BMWs for people my age, they were the cheapest (by far) on my 520. But as I don't drive really anymore I figured why pay 860 euro a year for something that sits outside my house more often than not? I just wanted something a little sporty and easy enough to run again, hence the celica. They quoted me on the GT-4 actually a last year without any issues, and now i'm another year older and have another NCB, they refuse me on it....?

I wouldn't mind but the car I'm looking at is literally just a straight 2 litre engine Celica? It's hardly what I'd call a 'high-performance' car?

That still comes up on Axa's website as a GT-4? I tried it on 123, and you're right it only comes up as a GT model there. Now i'm even more confused, as they're supposed to be pulling data from the same database??

Still coming up as a Gt-4?.. Have you tried that registration number on the Axa site?

    I have an 02 Celica 1.8 140 insured.

It is about €50 more than a 1.4 Octavia to insure, about the same as a Focus Diesel.
