Has anybody used / have opinions on Northsocial and Wildfire and their use as an app with a facebook page?

I want to stay on the right side of the Facebook admins in regard to running competitions on a facebook page.

    Are the apps really necessary?
What methods do you use to drive your business (competitions or otherwise) that don't need these external apps?

They are to stay compliant of Facebook policy. There isn't any other way as you need to be able to run the competition without using native FB functionality and to be able to contact them off FB. Running a quiz doesn't use native functionality and you are then left with the issue of contacting the winner without using the wall or Facebook messaging.

Northsocial and WIldfire are good entry level apps to dip your toes and see if app based competitions work for you.
