    Hello all,

So myself and the GF have decided a 6 month trip round the world is in order. We are looking at going 12 months from now, to allow us sort out work and save cash etc.

We have some countries we would like to see but are pretty open minded as to where we go (budget allowing)

We are thinking of India -> SE Asia to include Thailand/Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos -> S.America to include Bolovia/Peru/Argentina/Brazil.

Not sure about Africa yet, wouldn't mind to take in 2-3 weeks safari.

How much do we need? We reckon we could have a budget of €15k by next year (between us) Is this enough??
    Any suggestions of a route/iteninary?
Is it best book an all in one ticket or maybe just book longhaul international flights?
Where is good for these types of flights? websites etc

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.

    Hey OP,

Firstly I'm hugely jealous of you heading off on a trip of a lifetime! I can only comment on the South America leg though as I recently came back from a 5 month trip.

What I would say first off is would you consider maybe just heading to one area in particular instead of trying to fit it all in in one go? South America is amazing. I could have spent another 5 months there. Like you could do South America this time around and Asia the next trip or vice versa.

We started in Colombia, travelled through Equador, into Peru, then onto Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. Over the 5 months, including flights, injections and whatever else I needed before I left I reckon I spent about €15 - €16k. But I would also say that a) we were in Brazil for Carnival (extremely expensive from an accommodation point of view but a MUST if you can hit it at that time at all, it was my favourite part) b) we ate out every day until we hit Argentina and it got more expensive so we weren't exactly doing it on the cheap c) we travelled right down to the very south of Argentina which was far more expensive.

From a South America perspective for me my highlights would be:

    1) Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
    2) Inca Trail to Macchu Piccu in Cusco, Peru (do the original trail, it's more expensive but our guide was excellent, really knew his stuff and the trip was exceptional)
    3) Cartagena, North Colombian coast
    4) Ilhe Grande, Brazil
    5) Bariloche, Argentina
    6) Trekking in El Chalten, Argentina
    7) Ushuaia, Argentina
    8) La Paz, Bolivia - for the nightlife :D
    9) Buenos Aires - also for the nightlife :D (stay in Millhouse Hostel!)

We used Lastminute to book our flights which was basically Dublin to Colombia and Rio back to Dublin. They were about €900. If you're planning on doing Asia as well you might be as well off to use a round the world ticket. I'm not sure.

Best of luck with your trip, enjoy all the planning!

Thanks a mill for the suggestions.

At the moment we are more looking for a flavour of a few countries/continents Not sure if we will get the opportunity of 6 months traven again, so we hope to take in a much as is realistic without it becoming hard work and unenjoyable.

Judging by your expenditure, we are pretty tight with €15k for 6 months. I was kind of expecting that to be honest. Gotta tighten the belt!

    Thanks again.
