Can anybody offer some advice on converting 10K race times into 5K projected times?

The reason I ask is that I ran the Great Ireland Run in 44 mins approx and I am lookking to run the Joe Dolan 5K race in Mullingar this saturday in sub 21 mins? Given that the 5k course is quite flat and fast, is this achieveable?

I'd also like to be able to compare progress over the distances as I get faster (hopefully!!!) over the summer months so wondering are there time/distance conversion charts?

    Thanks,
    Alan

Have a look at the numbers that this calculator spits out:

Take the times it give you that are a long way different distance the 10k with a large grain of sodium chloride.

The IAAF Scoring 2011 is another good one. Lots of debate as to what is better for predicting say a 10k from a 5k time or visa versa, but theres no doubt the IAAF tables is better if you want to compare your times over a wide range of distances, for example comparing your 1500m time to your half marathon time to see which is better.

If you were at 7:05 pace in the 10k you should managa about 6:49 pace for 5k. If you're the faster (rather than endurance) type maybe 6:45. Given it's a flatter course you might manage 6:40-6:45 pace so sub 21 is on.
