Hi i am just wondering about my ford 4610, there is oil in the rad, but no water in oil. I was told it is more than likely the liners gone porous. Is this a costly job and is there possibility it could be anything else? Thanks

There's lot's of things it could be. and even with the block going porous there's potentially multiple causes for that.

I have a 4600 that did it recently, same as yourself, oil in the rad, but the oil was fine.

I flushed it thoroughly with a dishwasher tablet and it hasnt re-occured, which is odd, although the tractor does very little work so it might take time to become noticeable.

The block is un-lined but if it is the bores then they can be bored out and sleeved. another possibility is it's gone around the cam shaft which is sometimes also sleevable by a good machine shop. but sometimes the block can be scrap.

however I was also told about a core plug that can go porous too, in the head and is an occasional cause of oil going that way with no water going back.

I got some good advice here:

Oil pressure should be higher when running, hence oil in rad not water in oil - try a bottle of Novastop in the rad, might help, might not but worth a shot. Long term, probably looking at line boring and re-sleeving. Try the Novastop and a shot of Lucas oil additive as a stop gap = might buy you as much as a year.

Thanks. Would a leaking water pump make any difference? I wonder would it be worth a chance replacing the head gasket? Is getting line boring and re-sleeving costly?

I think the problem may be that the oil cooler in the rad has burst and thats how the oil is getting into the water. This happened with my 7610. Get the rad tested and if this is the problem you'll get away with a new core

Is there a oil cooler in a 4610 rad?

Don't bother looking beyond porous cylinders thats what it is, I used to bore and sleeve Ford blocks every day for 20 years, the only solution is to bore the block for a +100 oversize flanged liner and then bore the liner back to standard with new pistons, the engine will be completely stripped so no harm in looking at the head and a new set of shells for the shaft. Its not a cheap job but a bullet proof one..

What kind of money would you be talking?

Good while since I was at it now but I'll guess around €1000 for block, head, pistons, bearings, gaskets and shaft polished..

ya but you cant be 100% sure it can be that. There is other possibilities.

if it was me I'd like to be 110% sure before I went stripping and machining an engine.

The 4600 doesnt have an oil cooler in the rad, dont know about the 4610.

ya true. Well the tractor was used very littlle when this problem started to happen. The block was taken off last year because there was oil in the water and it was only a frost plug, but the head gasket wasnt replaced. I now have it off again and cleaned the oil off it and one part which looked doggy i bent a bit and it craked handy enough I wonder would this be the problem?

That's because your cylinders were porous all the time, it's just getting worse now, the frost plug was never the whole problem..

ok :( would I have to buy a new block so? Is it hard to change the liners?

Use oil in the rad, instead of water. Job done. No cross contamination.;)
