Hagstrom 1963 1 (should I buy)

Hi, I live in New York and have been meaning to buy a new guitar since selling off my old telecaster before moving last year. NY is excellent for picking up any type of guitar and there are lots of shops which deal exclusively with old & vintage guitars. Today I walked in to a shop which is quite well known and I saw an old 1963 Hastrom guitar for $800. To be honest I know nothing about these guitars but really loved the look of it and after playing it, really liked how it sounded and was very nice to play. Anyway I had intended on buying another tele but I am now strongly considering picking this up instead. Is definitely a very original guitar and feels a bit more special than buying some Fender re-issue for the same price. However I am not sure which would be the better purchase for the money. I don't just wanna buy an old guitar as a collector piece but want to play and gig it. Anyway just thought I'd ask on here if anybody knew something about these guitars and could advise if it would be a good purchase, or am I just paying for a vintage guitar that might not be very good quality?
