Hours cut at job -- Can I claim jobseekers after maternity benefit ends?

    Hi,

Not sure who to ask -- but before I went on maternity benefit, was working 26 hours a week, but it looks like overall, no hours above 16 a week will be available when I 'plan' to return to work -- the 10 hour difference would mean that I would get less than transport/creche costs, and therefore, not really cost-effective to return (don't want to anyway) -- can I claim job-seekers in that regard? Or do I have just quit and have nothing (but child benefit) -- and before anybody says, 'scamming the system' -- am 44 with my first child and have worked and put into the system since I graduated college at age 23.....

any advice? It's not an issue for Equality Authority, e.g. having the same job as before going on maternity leave as the hours simply aren't available, but also, if I put LO into a creche to work (and it's five mornings a week, and therefore, not eligible for any assistance, but the creche costs and transport into Dublin would mean full-time costs, and at a loss....I don't expect the state to contribute to me as a stay-at-home-mum, but what can I do?)

any advice would be greatly appreciated -- citizen's advice told me that unless I was fired from my job, there was nothing I could claim....sigh, I've never been fired from a job, but now, with the cost of childcare, it's easier to stay at home..........

    best wishes

If you leave your job, you may have to wait 9weeks before claiming jsb. Jsb will only last fo about 1 year.

To claim a Jobseeker's payment, you must be a Jobseeker, and actively looking for and available for full time work. If you aren't, then even if you were to leave your job or not, your claim could be disallowed.
What are your family circumstances? Are you a single parent or are you married/living with a partner? If you are married/living with partner, what does he do?

I would be looking for a full-time job, because if I only work part-time, I can't afford to pay for childcare, e.g. the childcare costs would equal the part-time salary, if that makes sense.

My husband works for a bank in IT and his job is as secure as any job nowadays, but his salary would not cover three people.....I am using my maternity benefit to pay for food and formula, but our mortgage is doable (negative equity, tho) but things would be very tight unless I got a full-time job and even then, childcare would take 1/2 of my salary.....

    so frustrating!
