Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray Opinions

    Hi guys.

I am the lookout for a new phone. I was looking at the Xperia Ray. I love the design and build of the phone, and was wondering does anyone have any opinions on it. From what I've read in reviews it seems to be a capable device. It would be at the top of my budget. It will be my first Android smartphone (although I've played around with Android plenty of times on my friends' phones.)

Coming from an X8, X10 and new X S owner, I'm probs a bit biased, but yeah. Good buy. ICS(New Android) is coming to it, reasonable spec and proven itself as a mid level phone. Doesn't seem to have its own XDA forum (yet maybe).

If you havent been on a smartphone plan before, you'll want to swap to one. The whole part of smartphone is being online, least 1GB/m, more likely 2.

PS: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B005I06WMC/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1334701565&sr=8-1&condition=new About the same price as instore here, but simfree. Returns are more awkward but you arent locked to netowrk. Something to consider.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I'll consider a plan, but for the moment I'll stick with prepay. Definitely going for this now, can't wait :D

EDIT: Found it sim free on here: http://www.expansys.ie/sony-ericsson-xperia-ray-smartphone-black-300mo+4go-microsd-219573/

Haven't had any experience from them, are they ok?

Any experience with ROM's etc? Newbie to Android so would appreciate any help, and if it's worth sticking on other ROM's. :)

I'll follow XDA forums and keep an eye on the forums here too. Was following XDA already, coming from a Samsung Wave. Phone's hardware is excellent, but the OS isn't. Sick of it now. Latest update made the phone sluggish and unusable.

I'm prepay too, moved to three for all you can eat data. NOM NOM NOM.

BTW, comes with a 4GB sd card, if I was you I'd replace that with a 16 or 32GB, they arent so expsensive on mymemory.co.uk(use them all the time, great site).

Yeah definitely getting a bigger card. I was considering moving back to Three, but I am a bit skeptical. I've had mixed experiences with them, hence why I am with Vodafone now. What's the coverage like for you?

Sorry about the amount of questions, just want to get as much info as possible. Does it matter what class card I get? Like if I go for class 6 or higher will I see any benefit or will it be compatible with the Ray?

Its been faster than that too.

I've never had issue. I get "fewer bars" than I did with o2 but people put far too much faith in them. Never had an issue on calls, texts are fine(3000/month, again NOM). I commute across the city weekly too and never had drop outs except one part of the train trip. Havent gone rural with them yet though, but as three buy vodaphone 2g space where they havent got their own aerial, coverage should be fine nowadays. I'd say get a prepay sim and test if for a week before you buy.

Any SDHC(so up to class 10) up to 32GB will work. I got a class ten on sale for my x10(32GB for 31€:D ) but its usually overkill. On a mid range phone I'd go with a six unless the price diff was very small.

That's good to know. :) I'll give Three a test drive as soon as I get the phone and decide if I'm gonna switch back.

I was considering the Ray for 289 at 3 and I got the Mini for 99 in O2, unlocked for 15. Similar specs tho smaller screen/smaller phone. Also 1 ghz processor and 512 RAM.

Happy happy so far although the battery is not great (1.5 days) - but I suppose it never is for smarthpones.
