Have you a provisional BER or what has your designer recommended, what you choose will have a major bearing on achieving compliance with Part L of the Building Regs.

Getting a provisional BER done today, have gone for 100mm filled cavity with 50mm insulated slab on the inside(Anyone i asked are very pleased with the insulated slab). In the roof section i have rafter lock and 50mm insulated slab on the pitch(May also use a foil insulation there) and on the ceiling area on the flat i have 400mm ecosi mineral wool. Basically its on the heating section i just really need to be pushed in one direction??

Hi, I am also in a similiar situation very confused re heating system for our new build. Just had our meeting with BER engineer he recommended an air to water heat pump and underfloor heating we had initially planned a combination of solar/oil and stove with back boiler but with all these new regulations. Decisions decisions....
anyone have any experience with air to water heat pumps???????????

If going with heat pumps, underfloor is the best choice of distribution system as its 36 degrees with towel rails upstairs. This system works best with fairly high return temperatures coming back to the heat pump, so invest in insulation, get rid of the big cold bridges at rising wall and eaves. MHRV is a good pair with heat pump. Avoid dry lining as it eliminates the thermal capacity of the block resulting in big temperature fluctuations, when th esun shines or stove is used. I've compared LPG gas paired with 750L thermal store and 2 panels of 18vac tubes against a split inverted 2 phase air source heat pump12KW and the capital costs were very similar, the heat pump edged out the hybrid system on running costs, but then heat pump maintainance is difficult to calculate. I concluded that once you get the heat demand down as low as possible, it doesn't matter what system you use. A good plumber and good components are a given.
