what a waste of petrol could they not just use one car like the rest of us or take a bus?

Years ago I had the misfortune of trying to get by Christchurch when a new Government was formed. There must have been 20 cars, with only the driver and a waste of space in the back, with loads of motorbike cops stopping traffic to let them by. Why couldn't they have loaded them into a bus and not stop traffic for, what seemed like, ages as they where only going to the Park to come back to the doss house. It's not like they did a good job.

I came across the Taoiseachs convoy back in feb, it was going from Cork to dublin on the motorway.
2 cars in the convoy going an estimated 160km/hr .
Nice the way the law doesnt apply to them isnt it.

    It's been done to death.

Gardaí are exempt from most road traffic laws when in the course of their duties. If we had a professional police force they should drive safely when not on an emergency call, obviously driving a pamper politician is an emergency. Now we'll get the story that it's safer to drive safely at high speed with blues and twos off.

Wasn't Bertie's election convoy doing around 160km/h a few years ago and I'd hope they weren't all Garda drivers. But no one got done for that and as we all know that SPEED KILLS, unless you're a copper driving on a Super's letter.

That is a load of bull. They might think they are,but can be done for any motoring offence while doing their job if it was not nesserary at the time.

Do you think a guard would be exempt from the law if he killed someone in a car crash while speeding for no reason?

Yes absolutely. That would be very safe.

It's not bull. The law is they are exempt while on duty, a Garda is never off duty.

If they kill someone they need a good reason to be to have been driving the way they where.

Just to clear a few things up..

Garda Escort drivers are probably the most highly trained members of the force, bar instructors.

They train at speeds far in excess of 160km/hr. More like 250km/hr

Its not their passengers (whoever they are) that decide what speed they travel at. And obviously while on duty they are exempt from speed limits.

Members on Chief Supt's permission dont drive escort vehicles.

Bull. I know a Guard who got speeding fine and points from traffic corp. Gardai have been prosecuted in the past for poor driving while on duty also.

They often make decisions to stop chasing on the grounds of safety. It is rare that a garda giving chase kills someone but you can be damn sure they feel just as remorseful as any other decent person.

If this is so then why do they decide to exceed the speed limit?

When exceeding the speed limit they are not breaking any laws.

Regardless of what they are doing or where they are going.
