I hope its ok to start a thread on this.

My logic is simple. This is my 1st year playing fantasy baseball and the one area I'm very stuck on is the issue of trades. I have no idea what equates to fair value so I thought if we had a thread to put up proposed trades those with more knowledge might be able to comment on the fairness or otherwise of the proposed trade.

A proposal came in to me today and I can't figure out if its fair, he's cleaning me out or I'm shafting him!

The trade is (I won't say who is who)

Lincecum for Ricky Romero and Danks

    What do people think?

There is an option for everyone to veto a trade so the experienced players can always step in if a rookie is being abused. I'm a rookie myself

I have my own trade pending at the moment too but it's wouldn't be for such big players as this one

As for yours, I'd take Romero and Danks no problem

I'd do that trade. Not sure how familiar you are with mlb but Lincicum would be considered elite. I had Romero on my team last year and he can be hit and miss. Not sure about Danks but he could have good games. However, getting the two starters in exchange for Tim would really help in the strikeout category and also potentially in the wins coloumn. Romero is playing with a high scoring team whereas Lincicum often comes undone in terms of run support with the Giants weak offense.

Thanks for that. I think what was worrying me is that I'm familiar with Lincecum and would regard him as elite, but am unsure about the other 2. I know neither are elite, but there is two of them, so its just to see if it seems like a fair trade.

    I'll sleep on it!

Okay first with this trade you will have to drop one of your current roster to making room for the second starting pitcher.

With Lincecum is definately a case of buying low, he has had an awful start to the season. At his best he delivers tons of Ks, low ERA and WHIP. Not as many wins cause his teams offense is not great. Romero is the the number one guy in Toronto and will get tons of run support so will probably win more games. He plays in the AL east which means he'll face alot of tough matchups so his ERA will probably end up higher than Timmys. His Ks will be less and the WHIP figures over the last few seasons look to be similar.

Danks is the makeweight in the deal, he is a solid enough starter, if this was a 12 man league he would probably be off the board meaning he is deffo worth having in a 16 man league. He would add depth and extra starts to your pitching. Both guys (Danks and Romero) start tonight so when can check out how they did in the morning...

I was just about to post at the same time...

I think you're dead right on the size of the league making a difference. In deeper leagues (14/16 man) the value above replacement for players like Romero and Danks would be higher (as in to drop them the free agent pool will have less options for an alternative, in which case 2 solid starters could be considered better than an elite pitcher and AN Other from the FA pool)

...as I say it depends on the size of the league and the other starters you have available, and the player pool.

Personally I would have Lincecum. To do the trade, you would have to drop one SP player as mentioned above. What I would do is evaluate Lincecum and that player v Romero and Danks, and then pick the best free agent SP and evaluate him and Lincecum v the 2. Depending on the size of the league I think you'll find that you might have a decent player already on roster, or the opportunity to get another. (is Danny Duffy available in your league...?)

Either way you have to be comfortable with your team afterwards...

I've pulled this trade (it wasn't that hard to find out who proposed it).

Reason being, you guys convinced me I was giving up an awful lot in a 16 man league. Better to have depth in your line up.

    Thanks guys.

No problem..wasn't doubting you for a minute by the way. I was more unsure of myself than anything.
