    looks like a yellowhammer to me.

    google yellowhammer and compare pics to what you have seen.

    great thanks a million, i suspected it was a yellowhammer, but from anything i've googled they don't appear to be overly common, and i'd not seen one around here before!! am delighted now!!:D
