Has anyone got a short summary as to the golden rules to a golf swing - something that works for them.
Swing is very inconsistent at the moment.

You'll get a million & one possible answers to that question I'd imagine.

Go see a pro for 3/4 lessons and you should be able to get the swing fundamentals from them.

Chances are the 1st thing they'll do with you is sort out your grip & posture.

Or you could go out and buy Ben Hogan's book which many people would swear by for putting together the fundamentals of a golf swing

    As above.

Ben Hogan's 5 lessons. You will pick it up on Amazon for small money..

Google Monty Scheinblum - Plane and Release by feel.

Great drill for staying on plane. It was an eye opener to see how limited my flexibility is. I have a three quarter back swing but it works so far.

Currently trying to get used to swinging within my flexibility too, I can just about make a 3/4 backswing before I start coming out of posture so I am trying to learn to transition there instead of over swinging. It's tricky because I tend to snatch at it and timing is everywhere.

Worth noting that a lot of amateurs have huge swings getting to or beyond parallel, yet when you look at the Pros hitting irons on youtube not too many get anywhere near parallel.

OP just something that is not talked about enough when it comes to the golf swing, Balance.. I reckon it right there with grip and posture when it comes to fundamentals. If you combine it with a good grip, good posture you will inevitable end up with a good swing.

Yeah kph balance is key. If you cant hold your finish your not playing within yourself.
From my own experience in the past when. I wasn't hitting it great guys would say to me swing a little easier. I have a natural aggressive tempo and this idea of taking it easy just doesn't suit me.
Anyway a pro once gave me a tip. He said hit the ball as hard as you like but imagine your on tv and you have to pose for the camera's after the shot ie hold your finish. Saying the same thing really as others but in a different way but it just clicked with me.
Now when I'm not hitting great or lose my tempo I just think "pose for the camera" and most of the time it gets me back to a good tempo and solid shots and I still feel like I can go after it.

thanks for the suggestions - the conclusion is that sometimes the technical details aren't as important as the basics. Probably guilty of overswinging and hitting too hard.

You cannot play golf without the basics.

An excellent swing with average setup will be beaten by an average swing with excellent setup.

If I was a pro, one of the first things I would say to someone starting out would for them to feel as if they are pushing their upper body down and keep their chin up. The main thing I see in new golfers is their upper body going up and down, causing them to either catch things fat or topping it.
